Spazzums08
Hey guys, I've heard that all or at least some of these are different products, made for different uses? Could somebody explain this to me?
Muddog
Oil flows, Greese won't. Or, light greese will stay where you put it for a longer time then oil. If you find yourself in a area where you can't take your reel apart use oil. I find that a shot of WD-40 will break down the surface tension so bearing will suck in heavier oils (30W or so). Some lubes have this built in.
gulllakeguy
I like Quantum Hot Sauce. Flows into the nooks and crannies reel good.(pun intended)
weeds
There's a Hot Sauce grease too. Grease gears (or things that get heavy pressure and get hot), except level wind gears (oil them). Use oil on things that get light pressure and need to spin freely. I don't know about bearings...they're over my head. same with drag washers (some are to be completely dry)
Central Bassman
I also use Quantum Hot Sauce on all my reels.
porterhouse
I also use Quantum hot sauce on all my reels. Just make sure you don't use to much on your reels.Brian
slipperybob
Grease for like ball bearings and gears because you don't want little dirt of metal flakes to end up in them. I grease the levelwind. I want grease to push dirt out of the way.Oil for like washers and bushings because grease won't get in there. Not as critical if dirt gets in. NCLaker
My Shimano reels came with a tube of Shimano lube. They recommend it for lubing all reel components, so I plan to use it for my Shimano reels. They don't reference using any type of grease for the spinning reels. TonkaBass
WD-40 and drags don't mix!

That's the one thing I was most dissappointed with, getting a squeeze bottle of mineral oil instead of the tube of lube.

Did you have problems with it? I assumed it was their own special stuff.
slipperybob
The oil is because they polish their gears and coat it with some highly self lubricating stuff. Brass and aluminum doesn't require the same lube as steel or stainless steel. Oil can be displaced by water. Grease isn't gonna move just because there's some water drops in about. Bushwacker
I alway grease all the bearings and gears inside my reel, as well as the worm gear. Those are the things that have to move, but not move at high speeds. For high speeds, I oil. That is basically the spool bearings. I have had good luck with Quantum Hot Sauce, but my favorite is TG's Rocket Fuel. For grease I use a the Reel Mechanic's Lithium Gold grease.
