poutpro
Anyone been chasing after the beavers yet? My father and I just started this week and have 3 so far.
HunterLee
I don't have any open water to speak of yet. I have three traps out, but don't expect much if any action. I need a couple 40-50 degree days to open my river up.
poutpro
Yeah a good warm spell to melt that ice of would be nice. Last year the water got higher in the spring and washed the ice away. This year it is lower, so there is an ice ledge overhanging the water that needs to melt before trapping gets any better/easier.
1runhotshot
I've got a question, is it legal to shoot a beaver? Like if you see one on a bank and you have a .22 and shoot it? Just wondering.
HunterLee
Nope sorry, no shooting beavers.
poutpro
Picked up one more medium sized beaver today. Caught it at a fake castor mound set. We had to search the bottom of the river b/c the beaver flopped the trap over the stakes and got out into the middle. Luckily, my dad stepped on it about 20 yards away and we found it. HunterLee
You should be wiring you conibears with a few feet of wire or cable so when you connect they get into the water and don't mess up the set. One dead beaver sitting on the bank makes the rest scared adn they won't visit your set. I had that happen a few times when i caught smaller ones that didn't move the trap, those are tough to get without snares and footholds.

kkahmann
In Ontario its legal to shoot beavers on your trap line liscense. Many are taken this way each spring. Beavers are a lot of work for the money--you guys are true trappers!
