What's in Your Garden?

Been a long winter, I'm gettin' sick of it and we're staring down the barrel of a snow storm. Was just curious what everyone plants in their own plot. Since it was my bright idea to ask, reckon I have to go first. Here's what I have planned so far, subject to change of course:

Early Garden

Radishes - Comet or Cherry Belle and Sparkler

Peas - Sugar Snap (variety to be named later)

Onions - Whatever Edna has uptown for sets

Main garden

Indian Corn - 100 day but if I get pinched grow up to 110 day.

Sweet corn - Bodacious, Incredible and Supersweet Jubilee

Green & yellow beans - whatever I find locally

Tomatoes - Early Girl, Jet Star, Roma's, Sweet 100's & whatever wife grows at the greenhouse

Green Peppers - Whatever the wife grows at the greenhouse

Zucchini - 1 plant (if I have to, I guess)

Muskemelon - Superstar, Athena, Alaska or Fastbreak, Magnifisweet maybe Honey Rock. Haven't seen Saticoy for awhile but always liked that one.

Winter Squash - Buttercup, Mooregold, Ambercup, Sunshine hybrid or other like type, Spaghetti squash, Heart of Gold hybrid, Turk's Turban

Cabbage - red and whatever else the wife grows at the greenhouse

Cucumbers - Munchers and Straight 8's

Pumpkins - Autumn Gold, Jack O'Lantern, Jack Be Little & Wee Be Little + whatever transplants the wife has leftover

Gourds - Small mixed, Crown of Thorns, & whatever else the wife wants for decorating.

Sunflowers - Usually Mammoth, a dwarf type & Sunspot or other decorative types. Keeps the birds entertained.

Whew! And the wife wonders why I take naps when I get done planting and harvesting all this stuff.grin.gif

Mine is primarily garden that I use to help fulfill my salsa fix.

12 tomato plants of mixed varieties including 6 Romas

12-14 pepper plants including green, jalapeno and a few others

Red and whites onions that I plants from onion sets

Cilantro

A few hills of cukes

A few rows of red radishes

A few rows of carrots

A separate small patch for pumpkins

A couple rows of peas for the wife (yuck)

Chives & rhubard that I cannot kill

Things I have tried that didn't grow worth a darn:

White icicle radishes

Dill (grew like a weed but the bugs were unbelievable-how do you get rid of them?)

Ever get dug out sparcebag? Geez, you guys off that direction got clobbered. Never had very good luck with icicle radishes either walleyeguy. Usually go over the fence to the sheep. Have you grown those Sunspot squash before Ken and how did you like them if you have? Ordered some (I think). confused.gif

This is the first time I am trying Sunspot.I have always grown Buttercup.Thought I would try something different this year.Plus they take up less space than Buttercups.

Test plots in Indiana rated them superior to buttercup.

I wish my yard had room for a garden. I have a small 1/4 acre lot, with a 2 1/2 car detatched garage plus a shed behind it, then the house plus a good sized deck, and the rest of the yard is a bunch of trees. Mixed between pine and silver maples, in my small yard last year, I bagged 60 bags of leaves. I just want to cut down all the trees, but they do provide nice shade on a hot summer day.

I only had a bit of space for a small garden last year, just 8'x12', the only spot that got sunlight, and grew mainly things for salsa. Jalepenos, red and white onion, green and red bell peppers, Habaneros. It was all I could fit, but it worked alright. This year, the neighbor wants to put up a big privacy fence, which will now block the sunlight that the one tiny spot in my yard was able to get, so probably no mini garden this year.

Thanks! Yup, I did order some so might be interesting to compare notes on how they do under MN conditions. We have room so we try several varieties of winter squash but have always grown buttercups as a standard for comparison. In the past have grown ambercup and mooregold. Mooregold kept better than either buttercup or ambercup, flavor was very similar on all 3. Needed a jackhammer to get the mooregold's open though.

Dotch.....I live in ND.A few miles west of Fargo. One other reason I chose Sunspot is they are smaller.I'm the only one that eats squash in my family. Will eat them first since the Butternuts keep much longer.I am still eating some of them from last fall.

Dan.....what variet of strawberries do you have.I just planted Ogalala and Ft.Laramie last fall.

  • Your Responses - Share & Have Fun :)

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
