Wayne Ek
Or should the subject be loss of mechanics. Wow... first really nice day yesterday and I took the pitching stick out onto the dock (our dock stays in all year)to play for the first time this year. It is really hard to believe how dull my skills get over the winter. I really need some practice!
ptkane
I did the same thing on my deck. Pretty rusty!

RK
Hiya - The first couple trips of the season are always an embarrassing deal until you get the rust knocked off. I might have to try practicing in the back yard. Neighbors and my wife already think I'm nuts anyhow so it can't get any worse. (Nobody thinks you're weird if you practice golf or basketball...but for some reason practicing fishing makes you certifiable. Unjust, I say. Unjust!)Amazing how fast fishing skills can atrophy when you don't use them for a while. You want to REALLY ruin you skills for fishing that takes any kind of finesse or feel at all, fish muskies for a couple months straight...Should get my new pitching rod from Professional Edge pretty soon. I'll have to get on the deck box and try it out. Probably have to sweep the snow off the thing first...gah.Cheers,Rob Kimm
Chris519
RK: You are not the only nutty one out there! I totally agree about the atrophy. I always start off rusty. One thing I always keep in mind is to check my drag at the start of the season. Am I the only guy who had has drag set too loose for that first fish? Sometimes I will flip and pitch down my hallway upstairs to keep from going crazy. Luckily, I have vaulted ceilings in the living room. I would try it outside but I think my jig would disappear in the snow! Will this winter EVER end? Chris
frogtosser
I sure hope so, I left my rods in the boat during storage I have to drive an hour to get them I cant even practice. I did get my new pflueger supreme in the mail today just need to get my new rods to hook it up to.
Bassman55
I put a different reel and rod together on Friday and had to make a few casts outside, even if my lure was landing in the 8" of snow.
Nick Kuhn
Maybe I'm just lucky but it really only takes me a half dozen tosses to get back into things. Even in midseason form I tend to throw a lure or two into shoreline brush every year. RK will tell you some of those muskie topwaters get a lot of distance. Always tough in the lowlight to judge exactly how far you've thrown it
fishin58
I attached my puppies rubber bone to the rod and threw it for her, she retrieved well and if she got off path I could correct her!! She felt about like a 5 lber in the weeds!

Always tough in the lowlight to judge exactly how far you've thrown it No kidding! A good topwater cast has hang-time, just like a NFL punt! Going from a 3oz bait, let alone an 8oz bait, down to a 3/8 oz jig will really mess you up. First time going back to bass after muskie fishing I just about launch the whole combo 50 feet out into the lake...I'm looking to do bass more this year, and I do need to work on the mechanics. It really does make a difference, my nephew oes a lot of bass and can outfish me just on casting skills alone!
