Scoot
I've seen the 5 gallon bucket type lure holders for muskie lures and would like a go at making one of my own. I'm looking for a bucket similar to a basic 5 gallon bucket, but with two key features- it needs to be about 14 inches high and must have a "double lip" so that it has something I can hang my lures on, but not have any part of the hook outside of the bucket. Does that 2nd part make sense? What I mean is... the top of the bucket has to have two rings to it so that I can hang the lure on the inner ring and not have the hook sticking outside the bucket. Anyone know of such a thing?
Giant_Jackpot
Scoot,My wife had a cat litter bucket that I use. It is the same diameter as a five gallon bucket and I think it is about a foot high. I installed a couple of pieces of thin plywood across the middle so I could hang more lures inside. I can take a picture of it tonight and post it. I would not worry about the hooks on the outside of the bucket. This has not been a problem for me. The nice thing about the bucket is you will probably hang most of your favorites there and when you fish out of someone else’s boat, you have most of what you need in one spot. Just grab it and go. Scoot
G_J, honestly, I think the hooks outside of the bucket are no big deal. However, my brother has two little boys that are often in the boat and I don't want either of them to end up with a hook in the calf when they're goofing off. One of them hooked and ripped his pants last summer on my current set up.Also, for clarification- I don't need anything for the inside of the bucket, just for hanging lures around the outside of the bucket. I will cut a hole in the bottom of mine and put the post for my butt seat through it. That way I have easy access to my lures, but they're out of the way. Thanks for your thoughts- keep 'em coming! Giant_Jackpot
Hmmmmmmmm.... I'm not sure why you want the lures outside of the bucket. What about the hooks on the lower part of the lure? I would think they would be a hazard as well. Maybe I am missing something. I'll send the pic and you can tell me if it will work for you. Mine also has a hole in the bottom for the seat post
Scoot
Sounds to me like I'm not getting something. I thought you were describing a bucket that you carry along with you, but don't put under the seat- sounds like I was wrong. I don't want the lures outside of the bucket- I want them inside the bucket. However, I don't want any part of any hook outside the bucket either (i.e., with my current set up the hook each lure hangs from has one of the three parts of the treble hanging outside of the bucket because it's hanging over the top/lip of the bucket).Yeah, if I can see a pic of your current set up it sounds like it might be just what I'm looking for. Giant_Jackpot
Yeah, at least one part of the treble hangs over mine as you can see. I’m not sure if you can get a bucket that has a double rim on it. I guess you could get a thin piece of plastic and wrap it around the bucket and use standoffs or washers to create the gap as you bolt it on. Anyway, mine is definitely not unique but works well for me (no dog or kids crawling around in the boat). http://usera.imagecave.com/giantjackpot/DSC04192Small.JPG
setterguy
A buddy used to use a foam minnow bucket, just stuck the hooks into the foam.
Whopper Stopper
Jonesi just leaves his baits scattered on the bottom of the boat. Seems to work for him! Hahaha
cjac
Scoot, I tried to think of something too. I tried craft stores, shipping stores, hardware stores, and no good ideas. Looked online at tubing, but not cheap, plus shipping for the length negated any savings. That foam bucket idea is not bad, just not the most durable. Option 1: I ended up with a $20 bucket divider insert from R&H at a show last year. Pretty slick for hopping in the boat with someone for a few hours, but the dividers are too narrow to do the seat post thru. Option 2: Those Dunwright tubes for the seat posts with a bucket around to keep the hooks away from the little guy. Downside is those aren't cheap. Quite expensive actually for really nothing more than plastic tubes. Option 3: Get some old tennis ball canisters. I believe 16 fit pretty well in a milk crate. Could probably make a cut out for the seat post, but then again a square box under the feat doesn't sound appealing. Or, get creative and try to glue them together, almost a home-made version of the seat post tube holders. If you come up with something really goood, call the patent office ASAP......Chris
