LAKES IN DANGER OF WINTERKILL

It's only the 16th of January, and we are already seeing the effects of low oxygen on small bodies of water. MN DNR has noted an oxygen deficiency in Graham lake (grant co.) and has opened it to unlimited fishing. I have noted an exceptional amount of winterkill due to low oxygen in two shallow private lakes. It's amazing that the oxygen drops this rapidly with the decay of vegitation. I thought with the exceptional winters we have experienced over the past several years we might be spared the winterkill experience, but this shows how nature regenerates. I guess the aquaculturists will be happy with places to grow fry again!

With the low water in the area, I can see a lot of lakes being in danger.

Ya fisher the water here never came close to avgerage fall levels the lake I'm on is down 16-18 inches and only 6-8 inches snow so far.I'm sure shallow lakes will take a hit.I thought we were commin out of the drought with the wet early fall, but it quit rainin & snowin so I believe were in for low lakes in my area this year also, which means more weeds to eat the oxy next winter and the snow cover is just enough to limit light!
