Relining the reels

Hello everybody, fairly new here. Looking for some tricks and tips to relining my spinning reels for winter mainly. I use 4 lb and 6 lb test and reel with the wheel of line laying flat on the ground label side up. I use one hand to reel and hold the other slightly above the spool to make the line tight. I have even tried laying the wheel of line in warm water. Everytime it seems to curl up bad and the lure always spins.

I'll let the pros say how to spool your line because I'm not sure I do it correctly myself.

I can tell you that some recommend pre-streching your monofilament line. Before you even run it on the spool you take the whole spool hand by hand and stretch it.

Also, if twists are your problem you may need to adjust your fishing style. Never reel against the drag. If you use twisty lures like a chubby darter you may want to try a barrel swivel 18" up with a leader to your bait.

if you are using a fairly common line like Trilene, you are better off having them spool it for you at an outdoors store, i know Gander only charges something like 2 cents a yard for mono and 10 cents a yard for superline. I get each of my reels spooled twice a year right before ice fishing season and right before open water, my line takes a beating during the year with how much fishing i do, depending on how much you do you might only need to change it once a year, but do it at least once a year, cuz it is the most critical point between you and the fish.

I secure a 1/4" wooden dowel between the wires on a wire rack I have above the bench in my garage and then slide the spool of line onto the dowel. That way the spool turns as I reel up the line to fill the spool.

It's not foolproof, as the spool sometimes gets going to fast and the line wraps around the dowel, but overall it works pretty well. I prefer having a spool filled at the store best of all.

Each reel and spool of line can be different, so I use the old stop and check method. I lay the spool of line on the floor and start reeling it in. After a dozen or so spins of of the reel, I stop and pull off a few feet and hold it making a large loop. If it twists significantly while I'm holding it, I turn the spool over and try again. One side of the spool will twist like crazy, the other side might have a slight twist, but not enough to bother about. Mono and twist go together like Beer and Brats, you really can't expect to have one without the other.

In the summer time I would say to spool up while on the lake and then pull it off while forward trolling and drag it for a couple of minutes and wind back on. I have tried all of the above tricks but if you are using Stren or Trilene it is tough to get it spooled on perfect. I only use Gamma now because it seems to have a lot less problems with memory - only had to straighten it out once last summer and then it was when I was fall fishing.

Just the action of reeling the line onto the spool twists the line. I do the same as Maverick. Check it after a dozen or so turns by pulling some line off the reel. If it's twisting bad, flip the spool over.

Having your reels spooled at a sporting goods store is a great option. You only pay for the line you need.
