Sno blower Blues! Help!

I have a 5hp snowblower, The other day using it I notice it started to lack power,I had to use it again and i could not put any load on the motor, I suspected it was the carb.

I took it off and cleaned it and put it back on, Same problem!

No power, also notice gas is spitting out of the carb while running!!!!!

Went to the niehborhood small engine place , they stated something is plugged in the carb, This guy was way nice and explained to me in detail on what to do!

I did all that and still same problem!

It runs not the greatest but it runs and gas spits out of the carb while running!!

Any ideas???

Also now i have it running good like loud and fast

Look at the carb and see if there is what looks like a brass nut holding the float bowl on. If so this is the main jet. When you remove this jet you will see two small holes on the sides that connect to a very small hole in the middle of the jet. A lot of times this small hole gets plugged with gum or varnish. Take some carb cleaner and shoot it in the hole. Then take a real thin piece of wire and work it inside the small hole then blow it out with compressed air. This is the most common thing to go wrong with a snow blower with a tecumseh motor on it.

After re reading your post you might want to consider getting that carb rebuilt. Shooting flames is not good. Could be you sheared your flywheel key and timing is slightly off. When you re hooked up your governor are you sure you did it correctly? If that is not correct you could loose the power under load. Either way the fire flying out the muffler might warrent getting it looked at by a pro.

Funny, I'm having a similar problem with my 10 hp tecumseh blower, and have also gone through the carb completely and put a kit in. It still leaks gas out of the bowl, even with a new float valve and seat. I tweaked the tang on the float thinking it might close earlier, but it still leaks gas out of the top of the bowl. I just turn off the fuel line when it's off so I'm not losing gas. When it's running it seems to use the gas up fast enough that I'm not losing any. One thing that I though was funny was the air mixture (pilot) jet that came with the kit did not have a sharp point like the one that came out of the carb.

It has a high speed jet adjustment on the bottom of the brass bolt that holds the bowl on, and I'm always tweaking it to keep it running good while using it. I do get the exhaust flame occasionally, and just assumed it was too rich of a mixture, so I dial in the jet a touch. Then it will bog down under load, and I have to dial it back out to get it to work through. It's a pain, but I can get the job done, and next summer I'll tear into it (like I told myself last summer!). I look forward to hearing more responses to this.

We have seen a lot of this type of thing this season in the shop. What we found was the carb body is corroaded where the seat sits in. Installing a new seat did not solve the problem. The gas would still leak around the seat and flood the float bowl. In some cases it would flood the engine because the float bowl vent was plugged and in others it just ran out the float bowl vent. Replacing the carb was the only fix. Carbs range from $90 to $150 depending on model and such. Good luck.

Ugh...that is not what I want to hear. I think I'll manage for a bit longer, than maybe start hunting the local hardware/small engine repair shops for a used/rebuilt carb for it.

My 8 HP Tecumseh had similar problems. There is a small engine repair forum called small engine technical forum and one of the guys there is called Tman. Each of the motors have different but similar carbs so if you order a new carb you will need to know model and serial number for the motor. In mine there is an internal float that must rattle when you shake it. If it does not rattle it is gummed up and totally unservicable. I bought a new carb for mine for 75 bucks. Make sure you take good pics of the governor. Rehooking and adjusting that can be frustrating if you dont remember how to do it.
