Propane Tank Question

ice_it_06

Question

What are the regulations on a 20# propane tank that was mfg in 1979. Are they suppose to be re certified or labeled after X amount of years and or new valve conversion.

I bought this tank through advertisement it was a NEW tank and full of LP according to the ad and pictures. Was picked up by a friend so I was not there @ the sale.

Turns out the tank is very used, repainted and not full.

Stampings on the collar show it was mfg in 5-79. (Far from new) It does have the new style valve on it but thats obviously not new as well.

As long as the tank has an OPD valve you should be able to exchange it.

The recertification rules are 12 years after the manufacture date and then every five years after that. So it was due for its first in 1991 then 96. April 1 2001 it had to have an OPD valve and recertification. It was due for the last one in 2006. If the OPD valve was installed by a jobber it should have a recertification stamp on the collar with a more current date.
