First Time Spearing Tomorrow

Hey guys...i've been lurking around this new forum lately. cool.gif Thought about spearing for the last couple of years, but never made it happen. Checked out some of the pictures on here, peaked a couple buddies interests, and tomorrow will be the first voyage out. Couple decoys, and picked up one of the spears with the bushing in the end so the rope knot is inside of the spear. Those spears seemed like the best out there for the ones I've seen at stores.

Gonna be spearing out of my buddies Otter Resort. Going to put a tarp over it to help keep out the light, and picked up the tip from someone on this forum about putting dark blankets on the inside of the shelter between the shelters canvas, and the tubing to help keep out light. Buddy has some dark fabric for the floor...should be good.

I'm pumped man! Was just watching some spearing footage on utube, and it looked sweet!

Gonna be out with a couple buddies, angling out the same hole, and may put out a few tip-ups. I just hope the lake is clear enough. It's supposed to have about 7ft of clarity according to a buddies lake map. Heard of others spearing on the same lake, so it should be good.

I'll bring the camera with, if I can find it tonight and post some pics. Not planning on any hogs, but size doesn't matter anyway right!? shocked.gif

Good luck to all heading out this weekend!

Awesome. Hope you see lots of fish!

I really hope more people can get into spearing. I've been lucky enough to have spearing passed down to me by my grandfather, but not so lucky with any other hunting or fishing. Now it's an incurable addiction of trying new things (bowhunting, muzzleloaders, fly fishing, sturgeon fishing, etc., etc., etc.). I hope others are like that and will want to give darkhouse spearing a try. I have an inkling that this forum will really grow in the next 12 months.

Well, the maiden voyage was a learning expirence. Had three guys in an otter resort, so there was quite a bit of moving around, and some loud talking from time to time. Wasn't what I would have preferred. Next time out will only go with one other, or even by myself.

The lake we were on was quite dirty. Could see the red and white decoy only maybe 3-5 feet down. My buddy compared it to staring down a dirty toilet. smile.gif

One fish did come in, but only one of us saw it. little guy that came in to check out the live decoy, then zipped out of the hole. It was a good time though. Looking forward to getting on a MUCH clearer lake.

Da_Chise31...I've been like you. Had fishing passed down from my dad, and grandpa's somewhat limited, along with rifle hunting, but branched out to fly fishing, flathead fishing, will sturgeon fish next year. Been toying with the idea of muzzy and bow hunting for a couple years now. There's just not enough funds, and time to do everything though. Looking forward to more spearing ventures though.

Do you guys worry about sound (talking, radio and such) while spearing? Do the fish pick up on that?

Later.

Marc

I think that you have to be light on your feet. Where your not pounding and making so much noise that your scarying fish.

I have a radio on in the house all the time, becuase if it didnt, i would go nutz i think.

Regarding the noise....Not to worry.

Talking, radios, etc. are low density noises that don't transmit from the air to water very well, and those don't travel to fish well.

Dropping a tackle box in a boat, running across the ice to a tip up, etc. are high density noises that transmit well to the water since they are generally in direct contact with ice or water.

Density of the medium makes all the difference.

Those are the things to avoid. You can get away with talking and radios, but watch your volume. I could have a conversation with my wife in our old apartment and not worry if the neighbors were eavesdropping, but if I started a yelling match that was a different story blush.gif
