North Metro Report 12/14

Got out for a few hours tonight. Nothing extravegant to report... but did pull in a nice small haul.

I started out drilling about half a dozen holes. Already getting dark, I figured I better drop the Marcum down and see if I can't find a hole to set up shop.

Within 30 seconds of dropping the Genz bug tipped with red Euro_Larva down, I had my answer. I set the house up on 16' FOW. I immediately had lookers... but wiht the bug and euro, had no takers. After 10 mins of lookers, I switched over to my St Croix legend Lite rod and 2# P-line to a Genz worm tipped with a waxie. Within 30 seconds, I had my first taker and pulled in a nice 12" crappie.

That Crappie would, unfortunately, be the take of the day. After that, the Genz worm and waxie would pull in about a dozen sunnies and crappies ranging from 8-12 inches. Was a nice pull for only a couple hours... but following the plan I had, all fish were released to fish again (hopefully) tomorrow. Key today was the finesse jigging using the spring bobber and Genz worm tipped with a waxie. Although the action was not fast and furious... the action was more than what warranted changing up with a different presentation than what was thrown at them. I am anticipating that the panny action should be heating up tomorrow morning before the so-called snow heads in!!! If you have the chance... head out and slam them pannies while the getiting is good!!!

Was out this morning on North Metro lake. About 13 FOW, with 3 tipups and one jigging rod. Got one small pike on sucker, one empty flag on shiner, and one 30+ pike on shiner, about 2 feet off bottom.

Caught about 10 sunnies, 3 of them were decent, and about half a dozen perch, one was decent. Tried waxies, but no takers, switched to minnow heads and they seemed to like that, on Genz bugs. We got out late, about 10 am and left at 1 pm. So not fast and furrious, but we didn't work too hard at it smile.gif

Thanks, Shackbash! I will not say that the bug will always produce... but one thing to keep in mind is that there are a LOT of things you can do to change up your presentation without changing lures. Couple examples, changing the live bait presentation will cause the lure to act and look different... waxies, eurolarva, minnowhead, etc. You can change up the position of the knot on the lure making it react different to your jigging technique. And CHANGE the jigging technique. Everything I just mentioned here is like changing up the lure a couple dozen times. This can result in more hits and more time with your lure spent in the water.

Good advice. Don't get me wrong, I love my Genz bug, but last night I think I had it down when no fish where around grin.gif.

First time out this years and I think I was play'in, more than fish'in. cool.gif

I kinda thought the same thing at first but if you read the last sentence it says "WE" got a late start.--------------- Not much action for me friday. was in 13ft. some lookers and when we were packing up my brother asked me if I saw his tip up. I said yeah its rigth in front of you can't you see that flag standing up.... took about 2 seconds until we realized OH Flag in the up position= fish. Kinda funny but cool to get the first flag of the year out of the way. Little snake but good ending to our outting.

It was definitely "we" not me, but I see I didn't say "we" at the start of my post. I actually am a 110% "legal" angler and hunter, down to the little details, and don't go with people who break or bend the rules (to my knowledge). But I do appreciate you bringing it up in case I was wrong.

I even used to be a volunteer water patrol on the western burb lakes, but haven't been for years now. You'd be surprised at a couple of the tickets I wrote out, weird ones, but I didn't like writing tickets.

Anyway, "we" were two of us smile.gif Two lines are enough for me. I wish we could have two in summer, but until we can, I will use only my one.

Oh yeah, fished the lake across the road from that one Sunday night, and no flags and half dozen crapps and half dozen sunnies, no perch, no walleyes.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
