Building rods in the metro

I was wondering who offers rod-making class over this long winter. A buddy and myself are looking to each make a stick over the winter and we have no prior experience. I was thinking that going to thorn brothers and asking around could get me some results but I can never seem to leave with money in my pocket. I am really just looking for options. Thanks for any help.

Give the guys at Midwest Rod and Reel a call. They have classes going on throughout the winter in the south metro cities.

I know that last winter there was a class offered in the metro area somewhere. Had you build your very own rod. Can't remember the name of the guy that did the class. Think it was around 100 bucks or so. I will see if I can dredge up the information.

Did some research and help on the other boards. There will be a class held this spring in Hastings for around $110. Build yourself a custom rod while you learn at the same time. Should be awesome......... blush.gif

Yes...Hastings community education usually has a few classes on rod building: A spinning rod, ice rod, and musky rod. I built a muskie rod last year. 7'-6" extra heavy...and I love it!! The instructor's name is Gary Wick. Great guy!! I went over and did the glue-up on my rod as well...

I will post when the classes are when we receive our winter/spring catalog.

I strongly agree with DinkADunk on this one. Rodcrafting is a skill that anyone can learn on their own. Seriously, it really isn't that tough to learn the basics. Save the $110 and invest that money into rod products. I would also suggest Handcrafting a Graphite Fly Rod by L. A. Garcia to learn the basics. I found it in Maplewood's public library (free). I would also strongly recommend another book called Rod Building Guide: Fly, Spinning, Casting, Trolling by Tom Kirkman. You can get it for about $14 including shipping on Amazon. (Christmas wish list?) There are also a few decent step-by-step "walk throughs" on the Web, including a couple if you do a google search for "rod building 101".

I believe the $110 fee for the class through Hastings Community Education includes the materials needed to build the rod.

I believe you have to pay a $29 fee for the class, and the components for the rod cost $107. If I knew how to post pics on this site, I'd put them up for you to see...

Good rod blank.
