vexilar

I have gotten into icefishing the last couple of years and finally want to buy a vexilar. I am only 15 so I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on ice fishing and was wondering how the fl-8se is. The one I have my eye on is 2 years old and is selling for $200, it is a genz pack. Is this pretty good deal for a used vex or should I look more. No one in my family is in to icefishing so I don't know alot about these things.

Thanks for any help.

Another option would be the Marcum VX-1 that Fleet Farm has on sale this week for $219.

That way you get a brand new unit with warranty for only $20 more.

+ Tax - Rebate= $203

Pretty easy choice if you ask me.

Having said that, you can find an FL8 for $150 from time to time if you monitor "the list that Craig started."

But if you are going to spend $200, why not buy a new VX-1?

You've made a great choice, you are going with a product and company that is time tested and will serve you for many years. Then when you are ready to upgrade the resale value on the FL-8SE is outstanding. If you haven't had the chance I suggest you visit the Vexilar HSOforum and check out the video of Jason Durham using the FL8-SE. wink.gif

I dont own either a vexilar or a marcum, but I saw some pretty good deals on the VX-1 yesterday at the ice show. They have the rebate on them right now, and I think it came to about $180 after all was said and done.

The VX-1 has the ability to zoom the bottom like the FL-18.

You really can't go wrong with anything out there these days, we all have our preferences, but you will have to find your own. They will all help you catch fish.

I do think the VX-1 is the best deal out there right now for flashers.

Go for it. You won't be disappointed, and for $200 and a blue box there is nothing better! My dad has had an fl-8 for over 15 years and swears by it. I have an 18 but both are great units. There are many perks that make the 18 better but one thing i miss from the 8 is the ability to have the range 0-30ft which is great for crappies or any fish suspended in water from 20-30 ft because with an 18 is is only 0-20, and when you switch it from that range to 0-40, it is a little tighter packed on the screen.

Either the FL-8SE or FL-18 would be able to knock out any interference. wink.gif

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
