Black gun (AR)?

Recommended Posts

I've been looking at getting a Bushmaster .223 varminter (AR style) rifle for coyote/fox hunting. Anyone have one?

I have a Rem. BDL .243 and use that most often, but am considering an automatic in a smaller caliber rifle. The .243 shoots great out to long ranges and is very accurate/effective. I like it and intend on keeping it, but I am considering something new/different. I'm not concerned about taking 300 yd plus shots with this. I can do that with the .243 and with a heavier bullet. This would be for more "close-in" fast action shooting. If you have one, I'd like to know your opinions or thoughts on this gun. I'd also like your ideas on good optics for it in this type of use condition (night hunting w/o artificial lights too).

Thanks.

I have an Olympic arms K8, 20" stainless steel bull barrel in .223. It shoots incredibly tight groups if I do my part. Olympic and DPMS make great AR's, for less than the bushmaster name tag. As you dig into EBR (evil Black rifles grin.gif) you'll discover that most of the parts are made by the same supplier, and then put together by the parent companies. I went with olympic because I could get my k8 for under 750 bucks, and with a burris 3-9 on top of it, I had a pretty great firearm for less than a used bushy. From there it is all about accessories you want for the AR platform. Never night hunted, hopefully I will get out and try that this winter as well....

Sort of boils down to how you are going to hunt them. I used to hang around with a crew from Iowa and they would run em and gun em with 10 pickups and guys with AR's. Trying to take a coyote that is running flat out at about 40 mph takes a lot of lead. On the other hand if you want to try and call them in and take them while they're walking or trotting the .243 will do the trick. I have had an AR for 15 years and get a kick out of being able to use it for dogs or coyotes, and to keep on shooting until the suckers are down.

One thing I've learned is that even if you have a 30 round clip bad ammo won't get the job done. I had some quality stuff and could count on it out to 300 yards. I bought 1,000 rounds from someplace and have about as much chance hitting something if I threw them all in a fire.

I have 3 AR-15s, 2 DPMS and 1 Vulcan, in fact 1 DPMS which will be very suitable for you is for sale in the For Sale section.

I love the guns, I would listen to Picksbigwagon and consider others than Bushmaster, they are good guns but way overpriced. I was at a shoot meeting with my DPMS and all the Bushis got put dawn in a hurry.

With my longer (24") DPMS I can hit sub 1" at 200yards, and 2" at 300 yards with brand ammo.

You will have a lot of fun and be surprised how good and well they shoot. I would buy at least a 20" barrel, flattop with removable handle or sight, a holo sigh (Eotec, etc) and go get any coyote in the area.

Flattop will give you more options for optics, sights, night vision, etc.

I am torn between a black AR15 or a volquartsen evolution. It is expensive. But not black.

Having been in the infantry I have shot M16s thousands of times and thought this looked fun.

What do you think?
