bobber stops

Sitting here thinking I believe I have tried them all and over the years I have found just using a rubber band has worked the best. I just make 2 wraps around the line and tie a simple overhand knot. Absolutely nothing fancy.

Those pre-tied stop knots on a piece of straw work fairly well, and much better on SuperPro than on mono though I do use them on both. There really isn't any reason to trim the ends while ice fishing (it does look a little goofy) so you can give them a tug to retighten after each depth adjustment.

I have some that are new on the market called SmartStop. I was given some but haven't tried them yet. They come 8 in a pack, are egg shaped and you lay your line through the center and snap them closed. You buy them for the size of line that you will be using. I hope they work well as they look like they won't hang up in the line guides. They also come attached to a round piece of plastic and you lay the line in, snap it shut and break it away from the round piece of plastic. Easy to hang on to and no fumbling.

I use these as well, and used to clip them, but found after awhile you couldn't pull them tight anymore, so I quit cutting them. Did that all summer, but unsure if its a good idea through the ice, but am gonna try it

It has been a while since i have used a bobber in the winter. I have been using the rubber egg shaped stops in the summer and like them. They make two sizes. The best option for you may be to make the knots yourself. If you used a cotton(or whatever it is that they used to make them from) material they would work okay. You might even be able to sell a few.

actually i have foud the answer and the make your own knots made by(not sure if i can put this on here becuase they are not a sponser) DuBros. youcan find the kit in fleetfarm and thats the only place that i have found to carry them. but if you make your own you can add a few more loops and they seem to stay much better than the factory made knots.

I use p-pro 10# on almost all my rods,...ice and open water,...for the power pro i have found that the pre made stops mork really good,...you just have to get them really tight,...i've even used a pliers to do the job,..they may be a lil tough to get to slide the first time,..but thats the only troubl i've ran into,...if i do get one that gets loose and slips a lil,...i will cut off the hook,. sinker,.etc..as by that point i normally have some wear by the eye of the hook or bottom side of the sinker any way,...as far as the smart stops,..they are prety much JUST for mono lines,...they do work well on mono,..i did have some troubles with it hanging up in the eyes of my sons ultra light pole,..but not to bad,...may work better on a pole with bigger eye tips,...hope this helps ya grin.gif

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
