There are way too many variables involved to give a formula that would work in all circumstances. Ice thickness, how long the temp stays at a certain degree, sunny or overcast skies, along with things already mentioned such as snow depth, current, etc.

It all depends on the depth of the lake a shallow lake will make ice faster than a deep one at first ice. Once there is a good layer lets say six inches heres how it would continue to form without springs, snowcover, bridges, and like they said some other surcumstances.

25-30 day 5-10 night make 1/2 inch ice overnight

25-30 day 5below-5 night make 1 inch ice

never have seen more than one inch made in a 24 hour day and it does not make any faster the colder it gets after the 5 below

Just my observation on my local lake. Under normal conditions and when do we ever get normal days in the great state of MN

GOODLUCK THE FISH ARE BITING even with the cold front

I live on Otisco Lake In CNY and this Lake Won't freeze if its to windy. We have had a string of 2 or 3 weeks of below freezing weather, but if the lake has 2 foot waves on it, it just won't ice. Its sooo frustrating.
