LwnmwnMan2
Replaced the stairs in a split level last winter.I used pine treads, mostly because we weren't sure how the look would turn out, tore out the previous tread / risers because they were full of staple holes from multiple carpets.Anyways they squeak quite a bit now, even though I put the bracing and increased the bracing. Two things I was wondering. I suppose I could put a piece of "angle" on all the corners to solidify that, but would oak treads help any as well??Any other suggestions would be appreciated, thanks. Flatlander
Did you glue them to the stringers? A little PL will go a long way in preventing floor and stair squeaks.
Surface Tension
Construction adhesive between everything. Another place for squeaks is between the stringers and what ever you fastened them to. If theres any bounce at all you'll get squeaks. Which brings up another subject. Whats you stair width and how many stringers. Could be the oak was stiff enough to not flex but the pine isn't. If you can't get at the backside theres not much you can do. If you can try tightening up the screws through the risers and into the treads. Maybe you can fit a stiff putty knife between the top of the riser and tread then work some caulk in the crack. When your back there see if that squeak is coming for the the bracing. If you can't fix it then look at the bright side. No one can sneak up on you. Correct... but I can't sneak out of the house either, if it IS only to go to work at 4 am................ After Thanksgiving I'll pull them all apart and run some glue. sparcebag
If your stringers are'nt cut square and aligned evenly (one low)and ya can access the underside find any gaps and install small shims (wedges) either glue them in place or a small finish nail. And like stated get some PL 200-300 forced in gaps.Small finish nails work best to hold shims.
