4 cycle Mercury Kicker?

panhead

Question

Anyone have any thoughts on the single cylinder 4-6 hp. Ive had 7.5hp 2 cycle 2 cylinder and a 5 hp 2 cycle single cylinder. The older 7.5 did a better job. Smoother and could troll down slower. Do you suppose this was because it had the extra cylinder? Anyway Im thinking of the 4-6hp. 4cycle. They have F>N>R> which I want but again their only single cylinders.Wt. with the 4 cycles does become an issue. I probably will at some point replace the 25hp 2 cycle on the boat now with a 4cycle. Boat is a 16.5 alumacraft. Thanks for your thoughts-experiences.

I would go at least 6 horse too. I had a 4 hp on my 17' Lund and it wasnt enough to get me at a decent trolling speed. Especially against the wind. Anything less than 6 hp wont do ya any good as a emergency back up either. In my opinion anyways. Well maybe if your always on small lakes.

Here on Lake Superior and bigger lakes a good kicker can save your life.
