Mounted the Auger Rack 11.15.07

Recommended Posts

I just picked up an '04 Polaris Sportsman 600 Twin on Sunday. The machine is in great shape, and really looking forward to the heated grips and thumb bar this season. Don't have much time before I head up to Alexandria to do some fishing in December, so rather than try to make up some type of auger carrier, thought I would test the market.

Any reccomendations on a good store bought auger rack?

I cannot remember the name of it, but it has a Y yoke where the auger sits in, and 2 velcro strap mounts for the auger handle. It clamps to the ATV racks and works really well. I believe I picked it up from Reeds.

Kylersk sounds like an IPI mount. Can be bought at Cabels and elsewhere. Thats the one I use and love it. A bit more to get it secured, but once it is its not going anywhere. Some of hte others I have seen like the Ryan's mounts just dont hold it secure enough for my liking.

I have been doing a lil shopping and comparing on the net today, looks like the Mad Dog is going to be the most viable option in my area. Turns out Cabela's owes me a lil money down here in Dundee, still want some feedback, but I know I can go there to get the rack for sure.

too funny, I was just thinking to myself....."self, you need a new auger carrier for your new ATV...I bet the folks at fishingmn can help with that"

I had a homemade one on my last machine, but don't want to use it on my new one as it scratches the rack...So far it seems the mad dog one is the way to go!! anyone else have any ideas??

Nice looking machine. I also use the mad dog. I removed the Velcro and replaced them with short heavy duty bungee cords. I think it was ace I got them at and the were black. They are the round ones with cloth like outside not the flat, black, rubber ones.

Very good idea, Sometimes the velcro is a little difficult to thread through. (especially in the dark without a headlamp)

I have the mad dog as well and am really impressed with how it holds my auger. I use an extra bungee to go over my shaft which holds it tight in the Y. Between the velcro and the bungee, that thing isn't going anywhere.

You ever checked out the auger rack with tube from AC? It attaches to your rack with the AC pins and works great. I think they are more expensive than Bulldog. I think mine was around $120.

Have any of you seen the rear vertical mounts with the quick release sliding guide so the auger never actually comes off the wheeler? You mount the power head to the rack and attatch the auger to a coupling. You can start the auger in the up position and after warm-up period you're ready to go. One pull of the pin and the entire unit slides down to ice level(and below) on a sliding guide. After drilling the hole, slide the unit back up and at the top of the stroke it locks back into place. My buddy has one and it's the only one I've seen. There were no clearance issues while riding as the bottom of the auger seemed to stay well above the ground. Even climbing up over the banks of the lake it was fine. Absolutely one of the best ideas I have seen so far. Really helps out the guy with back issues and can't swing an auger around all day. Which is why he got it. Also, it leaves room on the racks for other things. I do know he got it on-line, from somewhere out East I believe. Not sure where from exactly.

Sweet machine Mason, you will be pleased with you purchase for ice fishing for sure. I have an older sportsman with the same auger mounts it works slick, don't even have to strap the auger in when I'm out there just running spot to spot. Can't wait for the ice!!!

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
