New fishhouse Frabill vs Fishtrap

Wondering people's opinions on the fishtraps vs the new Frabill flip-style houses. Pro/cons of both. I am preparing to buy and don't see significant differences between the two. I am looking at the 2 person styles (Fishtrap Yukon vs Frabill Trekker)

I have a fish trap voyager and my buddy has a frabill magnum and what is nice about the frabill is the sled with the glide trax on the bottom help it pull easier and straighter, but I percionally like the fish trap cuz I love the seats, fully adjustiable and the padding is nice. But both are nice units

the new x2 poles are fatter, and have a different engagement system instead of pushing those little frozen buttons to take your shack down. if you go on the fishtrap HSOforum you can see the new pole design...it is GREAT!

I got a great deal on the trekker last year, but one thing I do like on the clams more are the seats. I really don't care at all for the seats the trekker came with and have since changed them....I think Clam's are much more comfortable. Build/quality wise, I think they are pretty comparable though.

I just bought it last winter. Pulled it behind my Suv a little using my hitch and the rope and also behind an ATV 3 times (all on the ice). It didn't wear through, but instead had a some gashes from rough spots in the ice that poked through when it was pulled. I put runners on it this spring, so maybe that will help. Also, I pulled the rope through the tub once and had to make a bigger knot for the bigger hole that was created. I would suggest putting a washer on the rope inside the tub before making the knot. This will help prevent it from pulling through. Also, I put the rope in a pvc pipe to where there is just enough sticking out the end where I can loop it onto the hitch on the atv. That way, the rope doesn't get hung up in the knobs on the tires and it tracks better. I rigged up the pvc setup after I had the mishap of pulling the rope through the tubs holes.

Try buying washers and put those on both sides of the sled.. I have the knot on the inside, then 2 good size washers and then on the outside 2 good size washers and another knot. This was i hope that the pressure is over a larger area and I wont have to deal with the rope pulling through.

I have and X2 and last year I was coming off the ice on Mille lacs (fast) pulling it behind my ATV and I forgot to put the cover on and it came open. My brother was behind me and he said it looked like a balloon. I drove like this for at least 2 miles and not a single bent pole or anything. I was very impressed.

I had a Frabil XLTwin I bought used at Cabelas for $260 that worked great for several seasons. It had been flipped jumped and run over dry land several miles and the bottom was still in great shape when stolen along with the one man flip Rover. Bought the X2 and it works good too but cost about triple what the XLTwin did.

My brother, buddy, and Uncle have had the two person clam flips and I must say they're very poor quality. The sleds are very thin but are light.

The black lining inside the house started showing light almost immediately after the 2nd or 3rd time out. It just doesn't last. But the tarp itself is fine. I like mine so far. I just bought a used Frabill Ice Ranger (single man flip) used for $20. Rough shape, but I wanted a light 1 person to haul out when it was only my fishing. When I bring a friend I drag out my 2 person Yukon.

If you are going to the St. Paul Fishing Show, Clam is supposed to have a Booth. I would bring some Pictures and talk to them, I think they would give you a new Skin.

Ohterwise give them a call, they are located in Plymouth MN, just West of the Twin Cities.

it's kinda crazy, when we bought our triplex, there where two tents in the box, and we have had it for 4 years and the first tent still looks like new. good quality in the tent but i would fish out of my x2 anyday for the triplex.

I think he's talking about the brand new frabills. I donno if any of you guys have seen 'em yet, they're not on frabill's HSOforum. I saw 'em at the gander in fridley, they had a rep showing 'em. Holy dump was I impressed. I've always liked clams, but these things threw me for a whirl. the runners are molded to the sled and have lids on them, which have built in rod storage in one and is open in the other. The seats are top knotch, much better than anything else on the market. The best part is the fabric. No more black, these are red and grey. Oh, I almost forgot, THEY'RE INSULATED DOUBLE LAYERED! That's right, it's about time someone thought of this. In between the two layers of fabric there's a layer of insulating material that looks like you could fish in -50 w/o a heater and be perfectly comfortable. They are spendy, though, coming in at about $300-$400 more than a clam, but if ya got the dough these things are amazing

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
