upnorth
Earlier this winter my buddy and I were out on the ice about forty feet apart and someone drove right between us. The worst part of it was that we were out in the middle of nowhere, no one closer than 200 feet on either side of us, and he had to pick there to go? What the hell is wrong people? Talk about rude!! Jig O Bit
I agree with all of you 100%. Had the same things happen twice on LOW this winter so far. My question is (and I have pondered this) what is the best way to handle people that do this?
Guest
Put up a snow fence within 10' of your house all the way around it! Then all those people that drill, drive and have pets wont be as close to ya! It should be legal and its worth a try! Man would that look funny. Guest
Suddenlysummer...good question. In that situation what does a person do? Maybe you do what big dipper was talking about and talk to the guy.AK....when you say he used a spud bar to open holes, was he opening old holes that he may have previously drilled, or was he punching holes for the first time? I have been on the other end of the spectrum where I have been fishing a spot for a few days and just go out and reopen old holes. One day when I went out there, someone drilled a couple holes right in the center of where I had most of the my holes previously drilled. When I got there I opened my old holes like I had been doing the previous days. It was obvious that I was previously there and I was opening the old holes. The guy had something to say to me about the noise I was making. As soon as I was fishing, I was catching fish. He still wasn't catching any because I had "made all that noise". Keep in mind this wasn't a community hole or well-known structure. It really irritates me when people sit a distance away with binoculars to see if you are catching anything. You can only hide the fact that you're catching fish for so long. Come talk to me and you'll probably find out more than looking through binoculars. The better you are about it, the more info you will gain. If you are an observer, look to see what other people are doing depth, presentation, etc. and apply it to other areas of the structure or lake if you can. jparrucci
Buy a paintball gun....that paint is a pain in the butt to get off a vehicle, that will stop them from driving to close. Leaves a nice mark on ya when you get hit, and it really stings.
Fish Toys
FishstunnerWhy only put the snow fence 10’ when you could have say a 200’ circle around your house with the bright orange snow fence! The snowmobiler’s should be able to see it and have plenty of room for lots of holes. When you think it is time to find another hot spot put a For Sale sign on the entrance to your domain. Hot spot For Sale and I think you would have a lot of takers? Geesh you could even list it on hsolist and who knows what it would go for??????? LMAO! Making $$$$$$ while fishing and the better half would send you fishing more often! I must be dreaming to post something like this? “FISH” ------------------http://www.icesaws.com/
Guest
LMAO, Get your fence and your paintball gun out and ready! Jig O Bit
Fishstunner, great idea. I will load up the snow fence the post hammer and have at it next time. That would be great if someone did that. You would sure get a few looks.
Swill
Paintball gun? I love it!!! I have one so I guess now it is part of my icefishing gear to keep those crowds away. My otter will make a nice base!
Farley
I think we need some **** snow so everyone stops doing donuts with the 4-wheelers when the fish arent bitin'. There was a kid out on Howard doing them almost the whole time I was fishin. This may stir up the crappies and the eyes didn't seem too bothered by it since I was a good 100 feet away but who wants to sit on the ice and listen to that? Dads, give your kids some ritelin and show them how to fish.
Pig_sticka
when i was about 12 i caught 2 nice muskies in a row 15-20 lb fish, had the 2nd one on for a while n got off cuz my dad couldn't grab it. out came a guy from the resort down the lake and circled around us a couple times about 15ft away and asked if we were getting any muskies, when he clearly saw us catching a few. well we weren't gonna catch anymore another i was just out on another lake just last sunday. went out to a spot nobody was on. out came a group of 10 drunk kids, plopped down 3 houses 30 ft away. 3 snowmobiles and 1 4 wheeler driving all over. they stayed there for 3 hours, got so drunk it wasn't funny. they had gas auger races less that 20ft away. 40 holes later and after they did doughnuts with all their vehicles and raced right next to the house they finally left. i would have said something but i was alittle out numbered by 20+ year old drunks. Guest
OK if im going to ride a snowmobile or a four wheeler i will go were no one else in near me. That is bout 1,000 feet or a area of the lake that nobody else is fishing. That way nobody gets mad and I dont get yelled at. Now why cant other people do that??? Just too dumb or what if you are scared of the ice dont ride at all then. PEOPLE its not that hard. ------------------FISHSTUNNER
deadeye
I have had many of the same experiences that you guys have had. The one that made me that maddest was when I was out fishing a hole by my house one evening, I was just heading out to pick up my tip ups when some jerk whipped out on the lake doing about 40 ( the landing is in a 25mph residential zone) almost hit me and ran over my tip up. Not twenty minutes later he came over and took my shovel because he got his truck stuck and then proceded to break it. I wasn't able to do anything about it because I was only 16 and there were four guys with him. I have also had people do the drill holes ten feet away from thing, I think that the paintball gun idea might be the key! Maybe I will have to find a nice semi-auto one with a 200 round hopper that shoud do the trick!!!Deadeye
deadeye
Nice one!!!!Ever tried casting a big daredevil at jetskiers? I did, last summer a guy almost ran aground to get me coverd in water after I gave him the #1 finger for coming to close.
Fish On!
No snow and warm whether means more riff raff (i.e. non fishermen) on the lake.
Ice Hole
I threw a snowball once at a passing snowmobile. His ski came within 6 inches of my tipup. The bastard. I think I pelted the guy too. He never came back. Snomobile=45mph, snowball= 40mph. An 85mph snowball? mmm.....
Guest
I try to stay mobile as much as possible unless I'm over active fish. If I don't get a fish out of a hole within a few minutes or so I head to another. A lot of the times the fish are schooling and roaming so a mobile approach is necessary. Sometimes on cold nights I might hunker down over a productive spot with good structure.Good Fishin, Matt.
smartguy
Let me first say that if possible, I try to avoid the crowds of houses. However, in all fairness, I must admit that I drive a front wheel drive piece of dump car. Often, only the crowded areas have plowed roads. While I try to make every attempt I can to keep my distance, if there is more than 8-9 inches of snow on the ice, I usually have no choice but to go to the crowded areas. This weekend, I was on Upper Red Lake. I easily drove my car to an ecluded area, but how often would I be able to do this during a typical winter? Guest
well like everyone else i have had this happen to me to.the only thing is , i'm not a very polite type of guy.so to discourage this i just pulled my thing out went out side and wized in there direction.as long as the wind was in there direction.you get a lot of comeback from this, but then you tell then how nasty they were for moving in that close ,when there is 11,000acers to fish on . they all seam to leave.some day i may be the one with two black eyes.o well
Guest
Two black eyes or a ticket from the DNR. I have heard several people tell me they were actively giving tickets for public urination the past couple of years. Also, it is just plain wrong. BLACKJACK
crappie-doer, I'll have to try that! If they're so close that they can see my little thingy after I've pulled it thru three layers of clothes, they're too darn close!!! As far as I'm concerned, they're being just as rude as I am!!
