Smallmouth or Rockbass

My son caught a a nice size fish, it has the reds eyes, but it kinda looks like a smallmouth, body wise. The markings are not indicitive of a smallmouth. Can it be a very large red bass or is it a nice sized smallmouth with red eyes?

I will try to post a pic later tonight, when I get home from work.

If it had RED eyes and looked like this, then its a rock bass

How big was it.. did you get a weight or a measurement? Also what lake, might helps us know what species it is.

smallmouth coloration can vary alot. i've seen them very dull, very dark, lots of patterns, and completely void of any patterns. they also can have red eyes. i've heard that means they have been feeding on crawfish. i've also heard it means they are simply active. once the pic gets posted, it shouldn't take long before people chime in with the correct info.

fish mis-identification is a big pet peeve of mine

it drives me nuts when i see someone catch a 10" largemouth with no dark lateral line and they call it a smallie.
