archery deer around walker????

Recommended Posts

anyone know about when the rut starts in walker? Got permission to hunt a big woods by some state land its a friend of mines grandparents and they said that it hasn't been hunted in over 6 years. was just kinda wondering if a little gruntin and rattlin would possible spike the interest in some of the bucks in the area yet?

Rut timing up by Walker is going to closely resemble the rest of the state. Obviously weather can shift things some but I would say a safe bet is that your optimum grunting/rattling times is going to start up towards the last coupld of weeks in Oct.

I would say it's still a bit early to do any major calling, but some slight rattling (imagine a couple small bucks lightly practing with their headgear, but nothing more than half a minute or so) and a few longer grunts may get something to come see what the comotion is all about. I wouldn't get too carried away quite yet though.

We are just starting to break into that time of year where the dominant bucks will start to defend their area. I'd go with a few mock scrapes or better yet, find one they made and sit downwind 60 yards. More often than not the bigger bucks will wind check scrapes rather than follow the main path, so you don't want to be too close and have them come downwind of the scrape AND you! Hope this helps you out. Good luck!

i'm actually goin up there this weekend to bow hunt with a buddy. i know its pretty early for the rut to start but hopefully the buck activity is good in the woods and since it hasn't been hunted it years that the movement is good. guess i'll just have to scout around and see what i can find. maybe one of us will get lucky. i'll post after we get back.

Rattelm'up, good luck this weekend. Where from Walker is the land you are going to be on? I know the area pretty well and just curious if it anywhere near where I bowhunt. I will be up this weekend and know a few peeps from Glencoe. Might just see you in the local watering hole!
