Windom/Dovray area

Doing something a little different this year. Going to stay in MN for our annual pheasant hunting trip instead of going to SD. My sister-in-law's parents own about 1000 acreas in the Dovray area and including her Uncles we will have about 3000 acres of private land to hunt. So we figured what the heck, instead of fighting for heavily hunted walk-in land let's go hunt some private land in MN. Only cost $5 for the stamp instead of the $150+ for the license in SD. I've heard goood things about SW Minnesota but nobody talks about it much on this site or pheasant country. Everybody is always discussing SD. So does anybody know first hand how the numbers are in this area. Also, did I read the rule book right.....only 2 birds per day with 6 total possession? Not a big deal, that's plenty, but a lot less than SD will allow you to take. Thanks in advance!

I hunt private land in the Windom area about 3 times every year. It is a 1.5hr drive for me and I keep going every year. We always see birds and always shoot birds, it has always seemed to produce very good for me. I dont think that anything can compare to SD but you will have alot of fun and it will be way cheaper. Johnny, SW MN is good pheasant hunting. Its not like shooting fish in a barrel like SD and yes its 2/6 but like you said that's really plenty. Private land access is the key out here, the public land is pummelled by 100's of people all the time. You will enjoy hunting here if you like to hunt and work for your birds and you will get them. If you are looking to go out and shoot 50 birds an hour like they can do over in SD, this isn't the place for that (thankfully). SW MN is for HUNTING pheasants, SD is for SHOOTING...

Thanks for your input guys. I'm taking one of my lumber suppliers and 2 uncles and 2 cousins with me. So we have 6 guys and three dogs for the hunt. I don't want to go shooting anyway, I'd rather go hunting. I'd hate to be filled out early in the day. I'd love to spend all day in the field and then bag our last rooster just as shooting hours come to close. That'd be a perfect day for me. My two cousins and one of my unlces have never pheasant hunted before so I was hoping you guys would let me know if birds were around, which it sounds like there are. I'm sure they couldn't care less if we didn't get a bird, but if that happened I'd get dump at the deer camp for skunking them on their first ever pheasant hunt. As long as we get some shooting and they get to see the dogs at work and possibly take some birds home, then we'll all be happy campers. Thanks guys.

With 3000 acres of private land to hunt you should have a great hunt! There will be alot of corn still standing though, so that may make things a little difficult.

I wouldn't be so sure about the corn. It is going off pretty fast in alot of areas but I don't know about down there. This summer's drought has dried the corn and beans and I am seeing alot of crops coming off weeks ahead of normal. Alot will depend upon how wet the fields are I think. You have have some good hunting.

Dude, Dovery is about 6 miles from my place. If you have 1000 acres to hunt you are sitting pretty!!!!

Nobody is in the field this week around here, we had 3.5" of rain in the last 4-5 days in my guage.

Great, I'm looking forward to it!!! It's going to be tough to work over the next week or so. My sister-in-law sais she talked with her dad and he hasn't been taking any corn down yet, mostly soybeans. She did say though that by next weekend he'll have a lot of the corn down. He got a new bigger combine that will make quick work of it. I don't know a lot about farming, obviously , but his biggest problem now is the drier (I'm assuming corn gets force dried rather than air dried) can't keep up with his combine. Probably a good problem to have though . I'll post some pics and results when I get back. Thanks again everybody!
