Sunday Duck Activity

Recommended Posts

We are up on Lake Vermilion and ended up with 6 for the morning. Shot 3 out of a group of 30 ringbills, a drake woodie, and then 2 more ringbills out of a group of 15... I was surprised to see all the ducks. Lots of educated local mallards that don't want anything to do with the decoys... Good Luck tomorrow...

Limits last three days, but Geese were shy today. They are starting to favor the open water already. I would suggest a main point and 3-4 dozen goose decoys. Two large lines one 20 yards to your left and the other line 50 yards to your right. wind in your face. The ducks should come right down the pocket and bank at about 20 yards in your face or come over the rushes to land in the pocket. Look at what spots will work for this setup and hang on. The stronger the wind the better.

Sunday's hunt for us was night & day different from Saturday, this would be in NW MN.

Saturday... we had wind from the south, 30+ mph, partly cloudy skies, just an awefully windy day to be out, but the birds were working and worked great! Saw lots of mallards and capitalized on that. Geese were few and far between but took advantage of the one flock of 6 that did come in while we were packing up. grin.gif

Sunday... Wind switched to the west and there was thunder, lightning, and rain when we were loading up to head to the slough. We hoped that it passed by and it did. The rain stopped when we arrived and we headed out to set up. First half hour, we saw plenty of small Ring-Neck flocks but they were all high and moving. We had to switch to the other side of this slough which really hurt the action on mallards, they prefer the south side due to the proximity of small potholes right behind the point we hunt. After the first hour or so, the low(er) flying flocks kept creeping skyward until all we did was watch passing flocks of birds. Goose activity on Sunday was very interesting however... lots and lots of singles, pairs, and very small flocks kept passing near but we couldn't get them to move our way. Oh well... still working on the calling. grin.gif
