no migratory birds to be allowed into the usa from saskatchewan

we have had a recent case of avian flu and i believe that usa hunters will not be able to take birds across the boarder.i am not 100% sure but i heard it from several people details to follow

This is off the Sask web site.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has placed a temporary ban on the importation of all unprocessed (not fully cooked) avian products from Saskatchewan. This includes wild game birds taken by hunters. The USDA is advising American hunters returning home to dispose of their birds before attempting to cross the border.

The temporary ban is in reaction to Avian Influenza being discovered on a chicken farm near Regina, Saskatchewan. The strain of Avian Influenza discovered is not considered a threat to humans.

Saskatchewan Environment would like to remind hunters that it is an ethical hunting practice not to take any more animals and/or birds than they can appropriately utilize and to draw hunters' attention to the regulations concerning the wasting or abandoning of game.

We are supposed to be leaving for there next Friday. Hopefully they have it solved by then. I don't really see the big deal. It's not like they aren't coming this way anyway. If they don't open the boarder up I guess the nearby Reservation will be eatting good for a couple months. Unless we do decide not to go this year.

Yeah, what do they intend to stop? Delay it a few weeks maybe, but they're all coming down anyway.

unfortunately some usa hunters won't be coming. we count on usa hunters spending millions of dollars here. and most usa hunters i know don't want to take any birds back except for the ones they want mounted.so still come makle sausauge with them or give them to a food bank.

Friends of mine just got back from there... they didn't know about this ban... happened while they were out there. Got turned away at the border. Had to drive around and find a processor who would take over 500 snow geese and process them and give them to charity.

Hats off to them, most 'hunters' were just throwing their birds in dumpsters or a ditch instead of driving back 50 miles. What a waste! I'm sure the 2 govts. will have all the migrating geese cleaned up and sterilized by the middle of the month, so we can welcome them with open arms when they start coming into the states!

SOmeone on the other site suggested calling US customes. So I did and the border is back open to bringing waterfowl acrossed. I would give you the name of the other site but this site isn't as open to that as other sites are. If you want to know send me an e-mail to the site listed in my profile.

my buddy called custom today because we are both leaving Saturday for Canada. They lifted the ban and you are ok to bring birds back.

The U.S. Border with Saskatchewan is officially open as of October 1. I guess someone came to the realization that live birds would fly over the border without checking in so not much point in stopping clean, dead birds from entering. Sometimes (often) my government colleagues do funny things.
