Hey Deitz, Q about Shimano Stradics

Recommended Posts

I own both the 4000 and 2500. I love em, but have ran into issues on both. Both the handles broke on the inside where there's a plastic + where the metal bolt comes out. That + piece broke.

I called Shimano and they sent out 2 new handles in 3 days. I was like SWEET.

2 days of fishing and the handle broke AGAIN on the 2500. A 15" smallie shouldn't do that.

I called Shimano and again requested 2 new handles sent out.

They sent them out and 1 handle is new and the other handle is broken in the same place as my handles.

So I call Shimano again (this guy was a lil rude) and told him my song and dance and I said that it should be redesigned (using metal)- he said that they have been getting a few back. What's a few? Few hundo?

Any ways, another handle is being sent out for a just incase. Over the winter I'll have to send it to them to check it out.

So my Q is - have you heard of this happening? It's not like I'm taking a pliers and tightening it down. I dunno what the deal is, but I expect way better quality for $120-140 reel.

I converted from a Quantum guy over to Shimano, but I'm thinking I should go back to Quantum. My buddy was going to buy a Shimano, but with the issues I've had he's not anymore.

I have 2 2500 and 3 4000 and 1 of the 2500's and 2 of the 4000's broke exactly as you discribed. You're not alone. These are good quality reels with a little cost cutting plastic. I eventually became wary of any spinning reels with this type of plastic handle. All my unbroken stratic and current and future spinning reels will have metal this time.

Whew! I thought I was treating my stuff like dump, but I know that I don't. It's weird I've had the 2500 for almost 2 years and never an issue then one day the handle is destroyed. Then on the same day the other newer (4000) handle was destroyed. mad.gifI was pretty ticked off, but hey that's fishin. Or is it?

I just think there should be a recall of the handles. Give me something that will last like the old school Smetryes (way off on sp there)made from aluminum. Heck Shimano doesn't even enter in an order - they just send the replacement handles out, so they are not keeping track of all the complaints about the broke handles in their call tracking system. I hope someone in upper Mgt actually gives a rip, otherwise I'll be on the replacment handle program frown.gif

Take off the handle. Where the metal bolt comes out of the handle there is a washer. That washer sits on a plastic plus looking design. What happens for whatever reason is like I'm tightening down the handle with unreal amount of pressure and the washer presses against the plastic plus looking piece and breaks it into pieces. But I'm not tightening it that hard. I'll have to get a pic. It's hard to explain.

Otherwise I really do love these reels grin.gif, but I'm miffed this keeps happening or how is it happening. Grrrr mad.gif

K, seeing if I can post this pic - not very good at this.

Well that didn't work the way I wanted to. Where are the steps to post a pic? I'll check around.

In anycase there is a good handle and a busted one so you can see, er well I hope you can.

I've never had a problem with mine, although it has been less than a year. I think I know the piece you're talking about, the one that comes out with the handle when you want to switch sides? It might not be, I don't remember the exacty way to do it on a Stradic.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
