No I have never have seen one but my father in-law told me that they used to use one all the time back in the day he said it work great for ice fishing once you found water that was a certain temp (I don't remember what the magic number is) you would find fish.

I just heard at the Portable Modification Get Together that it is a very useful tool especially for early ice outings.

How old is it and how does work? It looks like it has a temperature probe on the weight, but what does the dial on the front do?

Basically you drop to desired depth. Then turn the dial until the needle is centered. The location of the dial at that point is the temp.

There is a "menu" that shows the best temp for species activity.

According to Vexilar, these have been out of production for more than 20 yrs. I remember playing with the one I have when I was younger than 10, and I'm 34 now.

I have something like that(Pro Catch). I use mine on Superior, Inland Stream and Lake Trout lakes. Will even break it out when hunting eyes.

What length lead does it have?
