drilling holes in house

I finally was able to buy a new drop down house this summer. I was wondering if anyone could give me any input on the best auger to use and/or the best method for drilling holes. My old Eskimo blows a little oil through the exhaust. Any other suggestions concerning fishing from or outfitting a drop down would also be appreciated. Thanks

All augers have a tendency to do this with regular oil. I used the little bottles of Strikemaster oil in my auger for years and I always had oil blowing out the exhaust, as well as a black sticky residue that would leak or drip from the exhaust.

I would suggest switching your oil to Amsoil Saber. You can mix it leaner (100-1), it smokes much less, and you will NOT have that black goop getting spit out the exhaust. This will be much friendlier in your house.

If you really "need" a new auger, I would have 2 suggestions for augering inside a hard house.

1- Strikemaster Strike-Lite 4 stroke

2- Electric auger

With the Strike-Lite, I would replace the plastic flighted shaft ASAP with a standard metal Lazer shaft since the plastic flighting is so easily damaged. You will gain all the advantages of a 4 stroke including no exhaust smell in your fish house.

Advantages to an electric are obvious- no exhaust, no smell, and quiet. You already have the batteries in the house as well to run the auger off of.

The best advice I can give you on drilling holes with a drop down style fish house is this. Don't drill inside your house! Unless you're a real wrench head and loves the smell of gas/oil in all of the interior including bedding and clothing. I have had a drop down house now for six years and it still smells new. Whereas my friends house stinks to say the least. Not drilling in the house is easily accomplished by driving up to your spot straight ahead, then back up[straight]using your mirrors, staying in your orignal tracks. At this point, I pull the drop pins and lower the house close to the ice.[a few inches above snow line will do] Go in and take off your covers, mark your holes[some guys use a shot of spraypaint, others just mark by hand] Drive straight ahead so all holes are now visable behind the house and drill. You can now clean and deice them shovel off that area[for banking] then back up over your cleaned holes and your fishing, without any stink or accidental scrapes against the sides of your holes in the floor. You can lower the house down when you are exactly over them! Sounds like a lot of stuff but youll be doing that anyway, so its just the sequence of when you do what. After making a big investment like you did in your house I'd think you would want your investment to lastas long as it could for you. Once you do it this way it becomes second nature and is very easy to do. And, it pays off come trade in time! Hope this will help you.

Best thing I ever did was pick up a Catch Cover Slush Bucket to catch all the ice shavings when drilling. It wasn't that bad in the beginning of the season, but when the ice got thicker I ended up with a ice pile at every hole. That Slush Bucket catches almost all the ice and clean up is a breeze!!

I open all the windows and prop the door open when I'm drilling to let the fumes out. I'm usually carrying stuff in for a while when I get there and don't turn the heat on until the holes are drilled and most of the goodies are carried in for the weekend or even just for the day. With a little breeze it clears out quick enough.

I use the strikemaster electra lazer 8" and the catch cover auger mate. With this combo you have no smoke in the house and the carpet will stay dry.Another thing you can do is turn on your heater at the lake access or near by bait shop so when you go to drop your house down and drill the holes it's all ready warm, and will stay that way since you dont have to open the windows to air out the fumes.

I use Amsoil Saber in a SM 2hp head; no streaks at any of the 6 holes in the 2 years of using it. As was said; open the windows and door while popping holes and after you are done for a couple of minutes and you'll have little smell from the Amsoil Saber mixed gas, too.

Cheapest fix ever!

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
