Dtro + Hanson = Booyah!

Strange thing...

Put Larry (LFC) & Darren (Dtro) in the same boat and big fish are caught!

Put Dtro & Hanson in the same boat and good things happen too!

Last night, Dtro and I decided to investigate this theory a little further. To tip the odds against us, we decided to fish a new area of the river. Forget the confident spots, forget the known spots, we were up for a challenge of finding a couple good cattin' spots in new water.

Off into the unknown we go and it didn't take long to find less than 1 1/2' of water! Doh! Bump, bump! Doh! We continued on very cautiously watching the depthfinder and reading the river.

With water this shallow, we were obviously on the lookout for depth to fish. Even better if we could find depth with current and some wood as well. We "finally" came across an area that looked good and said this is it, we're fishing!

It was still early in the night so the cutbaits were tossed in the water, in this case, cut sucker on Gamakatsu circle hooks. We graphed a bunch of fish in this area and were hoping some channel cats were around. Bingo! Darren was the first to hook up with a channel cat, and a dandy nice one at that!

I'm continually amazed with the nice channel cats we've been catching for the last 3 weeks. 10lbs, 10lb, 11lbs, 13lbs, 13lbs, 14lbs... We just keep catching nice channel cats and I'm not complaining!

For the rest of the night, we continued to get fish pecking, playing, pulling, tugging at our cut bait but hooking up was proving to be tricky. Cats? Sheephead? Turtles? Hard to tell but probably a mix of the above.

Darren finally did hook one of these sneaksters which turned out to be a softshell turtle the size of a garbage can lid. No incriminating photos were snapped however. grin.gif

As the night wore on and we switched into flathead mode, the action slowed down. Just when you think we are looking at another flathead skunkeroo, I hear the telltale "twang" and watch my rod start to load up. Uh, oh! Here we go!

All I can say is the small flathead streak is over!! Took a solid month to finally catch something over 20lbs again and it feels good! Bad thing is... its BP Cat League night tonight and I think I hit the nitrous button too early. Oh well... I'll never complain about catching a nice fish.

One fish & one BIG turtle made sitting through 2 hours of steady rain worth it I believe! The Dtro + Hanson combo continues to produce!

Thanks Darren! Good luck in League tonight!

We've got some good video of the fish & release the Darren hopefully posts later.

And to think that you used to call it a skunking when you me and WWG were in the boat a few weeks ago.

Nice fish Guys sounds like it was a nice night to be out, even if it was a little wet. Hanson you sent me a text last night..... I think it was something to remind me where I'm supposed to be fishing? grin.gif

I might have to add to my list of spots to hit tonight....

I hope you didn't pop your cherry to quick....tonight is money night. wink.gif

Hanson... I would have to agree on the channel cats that have been caught over 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks has been impressive! It always seems that early in the year you get big channels, then it tends to slow down and you may pick up one over 10 lbs once or twice every 2 weeks. In the last 2 days Ed and I have caught 20 channels and there have been 4 over 10 lbs! Its a ton of fun when a fish is rippin line off while its still in the rod holder!
