Yes, almost all of the ones we hit during the day had signs.

I do not know if they pertain to the sand bars. The signs are posted at the start of the woods and not on sand bars.

I would think up that way, you would be safe. We were at island down stream, around bend last weekend.

I would bring 2-4 lbs of frozen sucker (depending on how many are going). We almost came very close to running out of bait around 3:00 A.M.. Local bait store sells 1lbs for about a $1.30 a pound. She runs out, so I will not state name of shop. Way cheaper than live and works great.

We brought fire wood, but with a little scouting you will find some.

Should be fun. You could almost walk out to those islands you are talking about. I could almost walk out island we were at last weekend.

We are going to catch a few redhorse and chop them up. I have been getting alot of bite offs with frozen bait lately, so its fresh cut sucker this weekend.

How were the bugs last weekend?

Bugs were not a concern, the wind kept them at bay.

Red horse was going to be our standby. The closer we were getting to running out of sucker, the night crawlers started to possibley come into play for some red horse.

Catfishunter, thats totally cheating, but I like it grin.gif. I think the old man would disown me if he found out I did something like that with the custom 9 WT he built for me.

Shackbash, thanks for all the info. I'll post some results when I get back.

Hey guys. I have been a long time user of this HSOforum but have not posted in years. I am a long time avid walleye fisherman, but recently my 10yr. old son and I have been shore fishing the rivers. Typically it's more enjoyable for him than joining dad on an all day adventure pulling cranks. I have gathered some great info from this site and him and I have enjoyed targeting catfish but obviously don't have it down to a science. I would just like to know some general areas that we could spend a night fishing from shore and have a shot at some decent cats. We have tried some different areas along the banks but so far this summer our biggest fish is about a 5lb carp, and most the time it's small pesky sheeps. I don't expect anyone to give away their "honeyhole" but if you could lead me in the right direction we both would appreciate it very much! Being a walleye fisherman I respect people's fishing areas. Thanks again. Great forum

Shackbash- We have tried a few different areas. We have tried under 35w/Blackdog, and over by Ft. Snelling. We have tried a few different areas along these banks. Any suggestions? From the looks of the pictures you guys obviously know what your doing.

Shackbash- I was reading your first post on here and you talk about "cut bait". You said middle body hunk with head going on last. Does that mean that you cut the suckers head off, then cut a piece from the body, hook the body piece onto your hook, and then hook the head on as well? Remember before you read this and say "What a dumba$$" I am very new to this kind of fishing. Thanks

Sort of...

A sucker that is 7-8" long should give you 4, maybe 5 pieces of cutbait. I cut the head off right behind the gills, then cut another chunk off about 1" wide, then another 1" wide chunk, and so forth. So you get like 4 pieces of cutbait off a sucker.

For some reason, the head is always the last piece to be used. Not sure why but thats what most of us do. Just put one piece on at a time. If nothing happens after 15 minutes, reel in, take the old waterlogged piece of bait off, and put a fresh piece on.

Channel cats find food by smell and taste for the most part. Keeping fresh bait with oozing juices and blood on your hook helps.

I saw this in a magazine:

With smaller minnows, cut them in thirds. Slide the body piece on the hook, then hok crossways through the tail chunk, followed by impaling the head. This will help keep the juicier chunks on the hook.

When I do use cut bait the head is the first piece I use. laugh.gif Hook it through the lips and step on it once to get the juices flowin and cast-r-out.
