Johnson outboard warning alarm

Big Walleye 58

Question

I am having a problem with the warning alarm on a 1984 115 hp johnson outboard and am wondering if anyone out there has any ideas .

Last weekend was out in this boat and could smell a faint burnt smell . After some research figured out it was the warning alarm in the throttle / shift handle box that had slightly burned / melted .Note that the alarm never sounded. I bought a new alarm and installed which is a very easy thing to do but now as soon as you turn the key on the warning alarm stays on .The alarm sounds if the motor is running or not .It may just be coincidence but have recently filled the oil resevoir and changed the water pump /impeller but I don't believe these are related to the problem or are they ? Thank you in advance for your comments .

I have a 96 25hp Evinrude, and when my water pump was bad, the overheat alarm was a solid steady alarm. That sounds like what yours is. Mine would be on as long as the motor was too hot, even if not running.

Does yours sound right away, even when the motor is cold? If so, I would suspect a short somewhere, especially since you mentioned you smelled it when it burnt - that had to be a short somewhere.

If not when cold, but only after running for a while, then I would suspect that the water pump is not working properly. Is it "peeing"?
