Lower unit grease????

HOw do you check the oil on the lower unit?? I have a early 80's Evinrude 35hp. I noticed some of the oil coming out of a weep hole, or the aftermath of the oil laying there on the motor. I don't know if it was from tipping the motor up for a second while it was still running while I beached it. But I noticed a screw on the exact oppsosite side of that weep hole. Is that where it is put in?? HOw do you drain it also??? Thanks guys

Tipping the motor up should not allow for lower unit oil to drain out.

To check it, remove the top screw and stick something (I like to use the end of a tie wrap) into the hole that is flexible and see where the oil level is. That, or try and add more through the bottom fill hole - which is the same way you would drain and fill it.

I would suggest just draining and the filling the lower unit as marine man described. Then you can check for water in it. If it has a way out, water most likely has a way in. It could just be a loose vent or drain plug, or maybe a bad o ring on the plug. Cheap and easy to do.

Good luck,

In case you have not done this before you pull both the top and bottom screws out and allow the unit to drain into a bucket. The fluid should be lite brown to greenish gray in color. If water comes out or oil is milky looking then a new prop shaft seal is needed. To fill you put the pointy end of the lower unit oil container in the bottom hole and squeeze the oil in until it comes out the top hole then replace the top screw and then quickly pull out the nozzel and replace the bottom screw. Now your good to go. The lower unit is not vented through any weep holes so what you are seeing is something else. Oily water from the exhaust perhaps? this is also a good time to pull the prop and check for fishing line behind it wrapped around the prop shaft.

That "weep hole" i. The vent is your drain as well as filler plug. The vent plug is the one above it. Remove it when refilling and pump grease in till it comes out there. That screw on the opposite side holds your shifter yoke. Dont remove it or you could possibly have to dissasemble the whole lower unit to get it back in.

Oh gosh yeah! That brings back memories. That was one of the first and best lessons I've ever received on knowing what you are doing before you touch something! Thanks for the trip down memory lane Valv.
