9.9 Johnson break in

JoeT

Question

Just picked up a 2003 Johnson 9.9 2 stroke that's new just been test run. Didn't have a manual can't get it down loaded from Johnson my computer keeps locking up. Does anyone know the proper way to break it in. Oil to gas ratio lower unit grease what type things like that etc, I can call a dealership on Monday, but have Sunday off and would like to give it a try.

Thanks for the help.

Oil ratio is 50:1, run it normally but don't put a huge load on it, get to full throttle for few seconds then back off, mostly run it at 3/4 throttle max.

Approx a couple of hours should be fine.

Gear oil should be already in the lower unit, in any case any type of marine gear lube will do it.

I believe what is typical for break in on a two stroke is double oil - so put in two pints to 6 gallons for the first tank and try to run as much of that tank out as you can before filling it again.

Good luck!

You are right Marine man, I was finale able to get my computer to down load a manual. First 10 hours mix the gas oil 25 - 1 10 min at fast idle next 50 min not more then 3500 Rpm switch it up, next hour bring to plane back down to 3/4 then a min or 2 wide open, next 8 hours different Rpm
