Corvalus Problems

Recommended Posts

Some might say that "problem" is a synonym for Corvalus....

If it's not right out of the box, I'd recommend returning it. No sense in compromising on the quality. I might look at switching up reels, as I had (note the past tense) one and it wasn't quite to to par. Almost all my bass reels are Shimano, but this didn't quite cut it for me.

Consider upgrading to the Cardiff if you want to stick with Shimano or look at the Abus. They have some rebates now.

The Corvalus is just a rebadged Corsair. The Cardiff would be a big upgrade over this reel. No offense, but the Corvalus and Corsair are not good reels. Some have good luck with them, but they are not very dependable. I'd return it if you can, either get your money back or exchange it for something else. The Pfleuger Trions are nice reels for the money.

Alright, I purchased this reel a few months ago, and I have the receipt and everything(by the way it was in the box, but I purchased the reel from a bargain bin). blush.gif

So my question is, is this a fixable problem or do I have to sacrifice 1 rod and reel for the summer while Shimano either fixes it or I get a new reel? confused.gif Also what would you guys do, go with another Corvalus, buy a Cardiff, or step up to a Calcutta. confused.gifOpen to any and all suggestions as I want to get back to muskie fishing as soon as possible! grin.gif Another thing that questions me is that when the lure is at the peak of the cast, the "crackling" sound stops, but happens again when the spool isn't spinning as fast confused.gif

I would take the reel back and exchange it for a Cardiff. You may have to pay some $$ to get it, but it will be worth it. The Calcuttas are nice, but spendy. If it were my $$, I would buy two reels for that price. You could get two Pfleuger Trions and throw in an Abu Record for the price of ONE Calcutta. Don't get me wrong, they are great reels, but if you actually have to pay for them, that is a lot of cash to outlay when you could end up with a couple other complete setups for the price of one reel. Tica also makes some great reels like the Induron which is very comparable to the Calcutta at less than half the price.

If you insist on Shimano, get the Cardiff. You will be happy with that. The other problem that plagues the Corvalus and Corsair is the drag. It pretty much explodes after a while. The reason Shimano changed the name is because of all the problems with the Corsair, they wanted to dump some more, but knew they couldn't get rid of them with that name.

Any reputable store will allow you to at the very least exchange it for something else. Then, you should be good to go. This way you will have the rest of the season to focus on fishing and reel issues.

yes, you should be able to return it directly to the store as long as you exchange it for something else. They will send it back as defective. I have done this for rods, reels, etc for years. Who knows, that may be how you ended up getting this reel from the bargain bin. If someone returns something to Cabelas (I don't know where you bought this reel) that has been opened, they put it in the bargain cave.
