Chipes
I will be fishing for lake trout near Atikokan the first week in June. Has anyone been fishing for them this spring? Are the fish still shallow or have then started moving over deeper water already? Any presentations seems to be working better than others? Thanks for your reply. Hemlock
Chipes, that is in and around the time the lakers migrate from shallow to deeper waters. It will be something where you'll want some local knowledge. I know I take a break from Lakers at that time, but that doesn't mean they aren't fishable/catchable. If they are still up shallow, you should be able to get them trolling deep runners along shorelines adjacent to deep water.
Finns
I am leaving in 7 hours to go to fly out of Red Lake after some lakers and what else might be biting. In past years it has been tough to set a pattern on what the heck those lakers want. Six guys caught 11 lakers. All the way from jigs with chartruese twisty tails to Rappalas to Bomber A's and a bubble gum worm looking thing. Mostly shallow as in less than 20 foot range over 30 to 50 feet deep.Finns. cedarnarrowsguy
Last weekend we caught and released 6 nice lake trout. Biggest was 14#. We used minnows on a lindy rig with a 1 oz. wght. Also used shad raps fairly close to shore 15-25 fow. Weather was pretty wet and cloudy, but still they were pretty active fish.
Chipes
Guys, thanks a lot for all of the feedback. I was expecting most of what I heard. Might be shallow, might not be. I am looking at the weather for this weekend and early next week I see 60 and rainy everyday. Figures. Any advice out there on how to approach lakers on a cold front with some rain this time of year? Thanks again guys. And hey, good fishing
bigdog
My best trout bait has been a chartreuse T55 or T60 flatfish. They pull pretty hard so you need a stout rod. I usually spool 30# firelne. A bright colored Swim Whiz (Believer) has also been good although you may need some in-line sinkers to get them down deeper.
Chipes
You mention T55 or T60 flatfish, and also Swim Whiz.....can you tell me who makes those baits. I'm not familiar with the name....thanks.
bigdog
Wordens in Yakima Wa makes the Flat Fish, I like the Glitter Chartreuse. Not sure who makes the Swim Whiz. You can get a T55 from Cabelas. Swim Whiz's can be found in most musky shops, maybe even FF or Gander.
