berfish
I was camping this weekend in Huntersville State Forest and my girlfriend and I kept hearing grouse drumming. Nothing out of the ordinary but....we heard it close to 30 times all throughout the day all from the same spot. I assume it was the same bird on its drumming log. The crazy thing was we heard it at about 11pm at night too. Do grouse usually drum that late and that often? or was this something other than a grouse? Any info would be great. Thanks. It seems as the drumming season progresses, they will drum at night. I am sure an owl will appreciate that. I also have been hearing tons of drumming this spring. Good season awaits
cribbageboy
I hunt for grouse as well as deer in the Itasca County area. It seems to me that the drumming has increased over the past 3 or 4 years (as expected) but i have not noticed any late drumming. Most of the drumming i hear falls between 11:00am and about 5:00pm. Although i shouldnt talk much because im not out too late to listening for ruffies.

Powerstroke
I was in the BWCA last week and we heard drumming at every campsite for 7 days straight. We moved 8-10 miles a day. On day 5 we had a grouse on his log just 10 ft behind out tent. I got a few pics and a strutting/drumming video. He drummed until just after sundown. I often thought to day trip the BWCAW with a single shot & my lab for grouse.I wonder if a guy could do that.
Powerstroke
A guy can do that. I've often thought about trying it. You fill out a permit slip at the entry point and drop it in the box. Obey regular regs and use caution if you plan on hunting on portages.
