motor tilt/trim out

When i winterized the boat last fall, everything operated in tip-top shape. so tonite I get to the lake for a contest at work, and try to drop the boat in. I went to put the motor down, nothing. not a peep out of it. I tried a couple fuses I know of and they are fine. after a while it started to "click" but no power to the tilt motor. any ideas, anyone, anyone??? My daughter would like to go fishing this weekend, so I'm hoping that it's an easy fix.

does it make noise when trying to trim it up? could be a cellenoid(sp?)

Does the motor run if you try to raise it? If it does it could be the solenoid. It could also be the controller switch.

If solenoids could be bad, you have 2 of them, up and down.

Also is it an outboard or is it an I/O ? IF it's an Inboard/Outboard you might have not connected wires with battery or they are not connected well.

sorry, should have mentioned that. it's an outboard, johnson 75 hp. i can only get it to "click" when I try to go up with it. down does nothing at all. I have power everywhere else, the motor will start and all lights work, just can't get the motor down to make her go!!!

Ok, try to tap lightly on T&T motor next to transom.

Also, check inside cowl for the solenoids, you might have to replace them, I believe besides boat dealer NAPA has them at much cheaper price.

thanks val, somehow I knew I'd count on you. if the tilt motor is bad, would you have any spare ones around there?? the quotes I'm getting from my local boat shops is around $1000 because they think the motor is shot, and I don't have that kind of $$. where are solenoids?? you said before there are 2. I see something under the back inside the boat that is under a black case with a fuse in it, is that one of them?? If I can't get it, is this something you'd look at if I come down?? also forgot to mention, my rig is a 1981 glastron boat with the johnson 75 hp. up until now, this thing has never seen the hands of a mechanic, has never had anything go wrong and I just took good care of it myself. my dad bought it off the showroom in 1981!!

I've had problems with my t/t several times and had excellent with the local electric motor guy who rebuilds alternators, etc.

He seems to be able to fix these exceptionally well and inexpensively.

$1000.00 for a tilt trim motor on an 81 johnson motor???? wow I had the same problem as you and I replaced the selanoid and the motor they were both shot in my 79 100hp glastron but I got mine online for $158.00 and the selanoid was $45.00 there is a manual release valve on the side so you can manualy move the motor up and down if you need the boat this weekend then fix it during the week I can give you the HSOforum for the t/t motor its boatpartstore d o.t c o.m

Ryan, wow that is way too expensive. Any electrical motor rebuilder can rebuild it for $ 60.00, I have one in Faribault that does a good job.

The relays are in the box as you described, they should be 2 black cubes with wires colored Blue, Green, Red (sometimes purple) going in and out. I don't have any motor or solenoid here, I would like to help you but it would be a waste of time at my place.
