It wasn’t long ago we we’re telling you about Appeldoorn’s Sunset Bay Resort’s top notch ice fishing accommodations. You can click the link below if you haven’t read that report already.

Now, after our 1st visit during the soft water season, I feel it’s best to give you another report on how things are progressing at Appeldoorn’s Sunset Bay Resort on Mille Lacs Lake. WOW… a lot of new changes have taken place since the ice fishing season.

Premiere Cabins

The old Karpen Resort restaurant “makeover” is now complete and will probably make its name to fame as the most premiere rental cabins on Mille Lacs Lake. Available as two - three bedroom cabins or one gigantic six bedroom, this will undoubtedly be popular for gatherings like family reunions or company events but, we won’t say a romantic getaway for two is out of the question due to the interior craftsmanship, fireplace, air conditioning, cable TV and the waterfront lake view these cabins have.

Valet Boat Launching

This year’s minimal rainfall has left many boat ramps on Mille Lacs Lake pretty shallow. No need to worry at Sunset Bay Resort and RV Park, however. Not experienced by us before, we were treated to our 1st ever, “Valet Boat Launching”. Taking instructions from Appeldoorn’s General Manager, Paul Waldowski, my sons and I disconnected our Shorelander trailer from our truck right next to the resort office. In no time at all here came Waldowski chuggin’ along in a bright red farm tractor, just finishing a Valet launch.

After connecting to our trailer, my sons and I hopped in our boat and were soon on our way out of Sunset Bay’s beach. After Waldowski backed us in, we were off and floating in no time at all. Didn’t even have to get my shoes wet or drive my truck back to a parking spot! 1st class service all the way.

Valet boat launching and dock usage are just two of the free perks for registered resort guests. Here’s Jim McCrank, better known as “Cranker”, aboard Big Red.

There’s also plenty of dock space for large and small watercraft, straight out from the sugar sand beach.

With a picture worth 1000 words, Appeldoorn’s Sunset Bay Resort is a well-kept, clean, family resort, as you can see.

For the kids, a new playground set is in place and my youngest son, Adam, gave it the thumbs up for guest use.

Once on the lake, the weather turned bitter cold and the wind kicked up, making for unfavorable fishing conditions. However, Adam was able to land a 16-incher straight out in front of Sunset Bay resort before we were forced back to shore.

Next trip, I know our luck will change so Cory and I can land some fresh walleye as well. It’s evident the staff at Appeldoorn’s really worked hard between the seasons. And, like the hard water season, their staff will make your soft water vacation as pleasurable as possible. That’s why we can’t wait to go back again.

Its amazing what this resort has done for the sportsman on Mille Lacs in the past 12 months. The Ice fishing season was great at Appedoorn's resort and now they continue to do a job that is second to none.

Appeldoorn's will be The Resort to go to on the lake shortly if not already. One needs to thank the Appeldoorn's, Jim McCrank and Paul Waldowski for a fine job with this resort and all the great service they offer.

I spent alot of time there this past winter and sure hope I have the opportunity to do the same this summer. From road reports to fishing reports and the wonderfull service to all, including the nice newly remodeled cabins, how can one not say that Appeldoorn's is not the place to be ?

Tommy and Dave,

Thanx for the kind words. There are many others that have had their hands in on this resort too that need to be reconized for their hard work. Jesse Priem, Justin Schmitt, his son Ryan and also Chad. All these cabins have been reconditioned by these guys.

There has been allot of hours, sweat and of course money that has gone into the Appeldoorn Sunset Bay Resort project and I believe that everyone has had a big part of it. Its still a work in progress as now Paul is our GM and doing an awesome job I might say! There is still going to be some improvements with some newer super deluxe fish houses and the adition of the (Four seasoned) park model cabins at the resort.

These same efforts are now being applied to our new Log furniture and park model rv cabin store (The Train Depot) in Onamia, Mn on Hwy 169 across from the Dairy Queen on the southwest corner of Mille Lacs Lake.

We invite everyone to come up to Mille Lacs Lake and see what the Appeldoorn family has to offer! On now both sides of the lake!

Fish On!!!

We stayed there last weekend also. I still can't get over the boat lanching, I don't know of a better way of not getting your feet wet. The service was great, you asked for something and they got it done. Thanks again guys.

Paul, I did make it back before the jailkeeper missed me. wink.gif

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
