Eric Wettschreck
I have a 70HP Johnson VRO. I need to do some pretty serious work on it and I have no idea what year it is. I was looking for parts and apparently it really matters. My question is, how in the heck do I find out what year it was made??? Is there a stamp somewhere on the motor I'm not seeing??? Valv
Post the serial # and model #, I'll translate it. You have to use the word "Introduces" to translate 1980 and up: I=0 N=1 T=2 R=3 O=4 D=5 U=6 C=7 E=8 S=
Eric Wettschreck
Excellent Val, thanks. When I get home I'll post it. Now all I have to do is find the model and serial #.
Valv
It should be on a tag placed on transom bracket, I believe on right side (or maybe left side...whatever), it's very visible

Jim Uran
is that for all makes or just the Johnson's I have an Evinrude that needs some work done. I guess it's not that important that I find the year but, well I might as well ask I have a 35 hp Evinrude, it keeps fouling the plugs. I got new gas in it and put in sea foam, it's peeing good, but I can't keep her running for more than 10 minutes. I had the Carb cleaned... What else could it be. it does maintain fuel pressure, the bulb stays hard, the valve on the tank is open. The first 3 times out this year it ran good. Must have been the old gas I ran through it. Somebody slap me.
marine_man
First off, you're typically better off creating your own thread instead of piggy backing of someone elses'.Anyway, does it idle? It seems odd to me that it would run fine for the first couple cans of gas and then not on the next and be gas related. When you say fouled the plugs, do you mean their flooded, or what happens?marine_man
Jim Uran
Yes you are absolutley right I should have created my own thread but they all sound the same man. I was hoping to catch the year thing and just kept going. Yes they are flooded, they come up wet. I changed the plugs also. No it won't idle, it will run if the is half or more but when I idle her down she'll dump out. The plugs will be "wet" everytime this happens. I should also say that I didn't get 3 cans through her just had her out 3 times. On the 4th time it crapped out. I did put new gas in since. marine_man
Ok, when you said the carbs were cleaned what does that mean? Completely taken apart and cleaned? Parts replaced? Who did it? When the jets and needles went back in were they screwed in the same number of turns as before?marine_man
Jim Uran
A local mehanic did it for me, he repairs small engines, Lawn mowers, cars, chainsaws, etc... He says he has limited experiance on outboards. But a carb is a carb right?? I'm assuming he did, but cannot be certain. I just got off the phone with another guy in Mahnomen that is a Outboard guy that everyone uses around here. Does it sound like its' something carb related??? I'd like to add that the guy did say that the carb was gunked up. I'm just glad that the weather is crappy now so that it'll be in the shop without me missing out on too much.
marine_man
If it's continuously running rich it might just be an adjustment is out of whack... as long as the carb went back together correctly.marine_man
Jim Uran
yeah I have confidence that he put it back together correctly but maybe it just needs to be adjusted or something i'm not willing to try, I'll leave it up to the motor man. I'll let you know what he says when I get it back. Thanks for the help though marine_man.
