Another Battery Question

gunflint

Question

I have 2 deep cell batteries. One is one year old the other is 2 years old. They were stored indoors over the winter and charged in January. I also use a 10 amp Minn-Kota portable charger. Both batteries indicate that they are fully charged by the charger yet when hooked up to the trolling motor it indicates "Low". When I put them on the charger the cells bubble for a few minutes the the charger say "Charged". Another clue is that our old charger from last year may have cooked the batteries. Is this a charger issue, a battery issue, or a trolling motor issue? Thanks

I don't know for sure but I'm thinking the battery charger may indicate a full charge when the voltage potential between the battery terminals reaches a specified level. The batteries may not be able to deliver acceptable current levels when loaded (the battery that is) and my guess is that the trolling motor might be using current as its indicator.

You could have the batteries load tested to make sure they are not the cause.

I have the same brand charger but 10 years old, it started doing what your describing last summer, replaced it with a new one (different brand) this spring and my trolling motor has never had more power. laugh.gif
