Wanderer
Borch, or anyone who knows, Amidst all this contest info, is there a post that has the actual scoring formula? I don't mean to be lazy and not look it up but unfortunately I don't get a lot of time to cruise all the posts. If its already out there that would be great, or if you could reply with it, that would be great too! By the way, was it just us or were the birds in SE MN call shy in general for the D season?! Decoys too for that matter. It was like there was a 40 yard bubble around all four of us when we used either. Fortunately my luck went from bad to better on day 3. Wanderer
OK, I took a break from work to satisfy my curiousity. Since you need to convert from standard measurements to decimal, I will give directions to the formula table instead. NWTF.com, click on for hunters, then click how to score. I've heard people say spur length counts most and now I see why (formula wise). Weight counts the least. My 25.1 pounder from 348D scored 66.85. Inch and an eighth spurs and 9 and 5/8 beard. Average beard and spurs on heavy bird doesn't help any. No matter, I was equally happy with both my Merriams Jake and last Saturday's bird. They're all special. Even the one's you "almost" get. harvey lee
Sounds to me like you are having a great spring. Congrats on the birds.
Cheetah
Wanderer, I think you may have missed a step in your directions to the scoring formula. Here's an online form you can enter the data into. http://www.nwtf.org/all_about_turkeys/turkey_score.htmlI hunted 349D last weekend. I posted a report in another thread. Basically it was really quiet and couldn't really get any birds to respond to calling.
Wanderer
Ah, Lunch! Cheetah, Thanks for that link - much easier! It came up as 66.8125 on that calculator. I've never scored a bird before, does that sound right? Harvey Lee, Thanks and yep, its been a good spring! After the Black Hills (public land) hunt I promised to kiss the ground at the farm we hunt down SE and thank God for private land! And I did! The Black Hills are beautiful and I'll go back but I didn't realize HOW good we have it at the farm. Its the only place I've hunted turkeys before. We're not the only group that has permission but fortunately we keep ourselves spaced out by at least two seasons. The four of us go out with a plan so we know where each of us are and work the birds from there. Started there about 15 years ago. By the way, who's your favorite driver?
