Eric Wettschreck
I rather enjoy state park camping. I also rather enjoy quite a bit of Pabst Blue Ribbon while state park camping. Tone it down and be respectful of others is all you have to do and good times can be had by all. There are a lot of state parks that I've camped at that you can buy fire wood from a local source. Normally from the back of a pickup along the way. It's local wood and, I'm guessing, most of it isn't imported. That's what I buy normally. It's another option. BLACKJACK
If you're having problems with noisy drunk neighbors, just flag down Ranger Rick on one of their rounds and point out the noisy camp spot. I think it boils down to common curtesy, respect the rights of others. If you want to be drunk and noisy goto a bar. If your kids are loud and/or whiny, take them to a playground. If your dog is barking, tell him to shut up or lock them up. Don't be yelling half way across the campground thats its supper time.
troutlandr
This thread has really strayed from the wood discussion. It is titled "Campfire wood" afterall.
sparcebag
I know Sibley and Monson state parks have an over abundent supply of fire wood, from the storm 3-4 yrs.ago.Both parks closed there were so many deadfalls, windfalls, they logged them stacked, and cut when supply is needed,if your in Monson look behind ranger shack bout a block or so cords & cords of mostly oak and ash.I cant believe the price for a small bundle!!If they need firewood dollars that bad take all the dead & downs!! then all the woodsie outback campers can really trod the area down!! BLACKJACK
sparcebag, believe it or not, Sibley doesn't sell the wood that they cleaned up from trees falling down, they just send it home with the park workers. My neighbor works there and you should see the wood pile he has at home! Then Sibley Park trucks in that crappy slab wood. Go figure.
BLACKJACK
Quote: They also are using that extra money to keep the park open and maintained for us. Thats a bunch of $%#@$!!! Justifying the high price of their crappy slab wood by saying that they need the money is wrong. If they need more funding, get it thru the legislature. Close down some parks to make the point that they don't have money. Outdoor funding always takes a backseat to education and health care funding. Thats why outdoor groups are trying to get the dedicated funding bill passed, outdoors and environment spending always takes a backseat. If the DNR and state parks really wanted to encourage people to buy wood in the park, then they should sell it at cost. If they were selling it at $1 a bundle, very few people would be (Contact Us Please), you could buy 5-6 bundles, have a couple nice fires, people would be happy. But you start talking 6 bundles times $4, then you're starting to talk about real money. I think that the DNR is overracting by banning any outside wood. Reading thru the articles about the ash borer in the Strib, its two states away!! It hasn't even reached Wisconsin yet. I think a ban on any out of state wood and/or a ban on bringing wood from more than 100 miles would be sufficient. All this ban is going to do is make the nice park rangers into wood cops and it will give the (Contact Us Please) rangers an excuse to be a (Contact Us Please). We saw that when the parks decided to tighten up on dog control. There was one ranger up at Crow Wing that bragged about giving a ticket to a guy with a dog off the leash when the park was empty.I'm going camping to a state park this weekend. I'll report back on the quality and price of the wood that they sell. I'm also going to have some in the back of my truck, after I burn thru there bundle in 1/2 hour, I'll be having a nice fire with my wood. This post is now back on track talking about campfire wood. Let the flames begin.
Scott K
I think by charging more for the wood, is there way of having the people that use the parks pay for it. If you stay there alot, and I never stay in one, why should I pay more taxes to maintain it, and keep it open?Dont take it the wrong way, I use to stay in state parks, years ago. And I use to complain about the wood, and the cost of the permits. Now I bought my own land and stay there. I dont ask for anybody to pay more taxes to keep me camping there. Since I am the one using the land, I expect to pay.
