Lac Seul in june

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am going to lac seul on june 17th through the 21st. Does anybody know what time of the year the ice comes off up there. Just trying to get a feel for what kind of walleye fishing we will be doing. Mainly jigging or lindy's, looking for running water. I have never been up there so I am not sure what it will be like. Thanks for any info.

we go just south of lac seul (Wabaskang Lake) and the ice comes off in late april the second week in june is when we usually have the best luck. we mainly pull spinner rigs and pitch jigs but we have had success with bobber fishing and trolling cranks. the walleyes are usually pretty active all day and arent much trouble to find in large numbers.

I typically fish Lac Suel in early June. Not just Lac Suel but Abram, Minitaki, Pelican etc. on Lac Suel we fish around Senn Bay and Archer Lake/Bay. I use orange jigs with a leech when I can avoid rocks and smallies.

If i am in rocky areas I will use a Lindy rig with a crawler, but I fish it more like a jic than a rig. It just helps with snags. I have found spinners typically attracted the "jackfish".

Just be sure to bring lots of tackle, logs, rocks and fish all get their share. Don't forget the bug dope, shades, and sun dope too, along with good rain gear and warm clothes too. I also strongly recomend the Beer Store in Sioux Lookout. I love getting beer off a "roller belt"

we will be on Lac Seul on the 23rd -26 of June for the third year in a row and my father has been gong the first week of june for many years. He catches them in the shallows or in standing timber...basically spawning areas as they usually are in the process or just finishing when he goes.....they just use jigs and leaches......last year the fish when we got up on the last sat of june were relating to the weedlines..... pitching jigs and salted minnows and flashy baits along the weed lines produced alot of fish incuding 6 northers that went 40+ inches with countless walleyes mixed in........Where are you going on the system?????? Anywhere you go you should not have a problem having nonstop action once you find what type of cover they are relating to. Stay somewhat shallow and you will find the walleyes...Good Luck

I'm heading up in Aug the first week, we have been going up there for 9 yrs in the falland have done really well. This will be the first trip in the middle of the summer, so when you guys are talking shallow how shallow are you talking? and if you guys drift with lindy rigs or troll very slow We did alot of verticle jigging then with plastics and minnows. Thanks for the info jason

Thanks for all the info fellas. We will be staying at a place called lac seul adventures. Is there a area called vaughn bay? I have never been there and don't know the layout that well. I had a feeling that we would probably be there post spawn. Hoping to find lots of fish and just enjoy canada. I am a first timer up there so I really can't wait to get there. grin.gif

I have been going to Mahkwa for 20 years and I believe the place you are going is right around the corner. Vaughn is good, but there will be quite a few boats there. Dont just rely upon Vaughn, get out and use other parts of the lake. There is a nasty rockpile in Vaughn that could claim your prop if you dont watch out. Ask them about it before you head out. In low water, it might stick out, so you could see it.

Jigs and minnows or just a twister tail with no minnow will take a lot of fish. Rigs will work, spinners will work, cranks will work, and a butter knife with a hook attached to it will work. It is more about finding a concentration and fishing how you like. It is a great time to learn how to use other techniques. shoot me your email and I can give you some specifics if you want.

CodyDawg what time of year do you go up? I know the rock pile that you are talking about, I will be up there the first week in August. We rent a house boat and stay at taylor Island. It's my first year going this early we went late Sept for about ten years.

will be on the houseboat the first full week of June and can be cold yet if like last year, very HOT. Red Saltwater Gulp 4" shad is phenominal, and green and chartruesse jig heads are the secret potion!!!

codydawg, is there a place called deception bay? There is a place we are putting the boats in and then leaving the vehicles while we take the boats to the cabin for a few days. Rumor has it we will pay to have someone watch the vehicles. I know we are going to dryden and the place we park the vehicles is something like 28 miles of gravel roads to get to. Does any of this sound familiar?

Yes, there is a place called deception bay, but that is nowhere near Mahkwa. In fact, before they built the road into Mahkwa, you had to boat in from Deception Bay. It was about at 3 hour trip.

The gravel road you mention is prolly the one that brings you to the landing by Mahkwa. It is a 5-10 minute boat ride to the place you will be staying. You do not have to pay to have your vehicle watched if we are talking about the same one. We haven't had one bit of a problem either. It is a First Nation boat landing and there are people coming and going constantly. There is a guy who lives there and helps out a bit. The road is not great, but has improved DRAMATICALLY since they built it. Keep that in mind as you bounce along. Oh, watch out for logging trucks.

I am surprised at how the road going into Archies has improved over the last few years. It sure takes time off of the trip when you dont have to keep it under 20 MPH the whole time. Vaughn bay is one of the best/worst places to fish on the lake. A great spot for catching a lot of walleyes in a short time, but terrible for boat traffic. I go up to Mahkwa to get away from the people, and it really [PoorWordUsage]es me off when I have to dodge another boat while drifting in Vaughn. I just tend to stay away. There are several better spots within 10 miles of Mahkwa than Vaughn. Plus it is a lot of fun exploring for new spots when you have the lakemaster chip!

never had that problem in Vaughn but they talk it up like it is the place to be so I could see it getting "crowded" When they first opened up that road to fishing guests about 12 years ago they had to meet us in Hudson and guide us to the landing....every couple of miles the guide would stop and let the rest of the party catch up cause you couldn't see with all the dirt in the air from the car in front of you. It has defenitly gotten better!! Last year we even had guys talking about how bad that stretch of road is and I just kinda laughed when I thought back on how it was. Almost an hour to go 20 miles!!! Can't wait to go back in the end of June!!!

Do you have a lakemaster chip for Lac Seul? I'm thinking of getting one for when I go up in August. We will only be a few miles from Mahkwa. There is a great spot by Pine point if you have heard of it thanks

there are great spots all over that system and around that area.....my buddy that I go with had a chip for the area last year....One really nice feature the chip had were danger areas like big boulders or hazards marked so you could stay away......but that didn't stop us from hitting something floating in 50ft of water and took out a nice chunk of the skag!!!

Clamtrap- I do not have one, but a guy in our group does, and it is really nice getting to spots that are upwards of 15 miles from Mahkwa. We have a couple of boats follow his to get to the general location without getting lost or hitting rocks in unmarked danger areas. I would strongly reccomend getting a chip just for the sole fact that it allows you to explore new areas without having to worry about getting lost. It is also nice to be able to mark your area for the next year. And that spot by pine is always good for us as well!
