ocf1
I am doing a science fair project on fishing line and i need a few questions answered1.What does lb. test mean?2.What tests should i do to test it?3.what abrasion tests can i do?4.What other tests should i do?I am planning on posting this on this forum to show others. All help is appreciated It's been a long time since I read about fishing lines, but I'd thought the lb test is for the break strength of tying a single knot. Try these kinds of tests. Abrasion on rocks and wood -limp line test 90 degrees angle, 180 degrees -stretched tight line test andgle 90 degrees, 180 degrees **do the same thing with wet lines** Light reflection/refraction -put different lines on a black background sheet -put different lines on a white background sheet -put different lines on a multicolor background sheet **You can do the same thing in a water tank**
Kyle Sandberg
I'm not 100% but I belive lb test is how much just the line can hold. If you take out knots and crinks, It should be right. For lb test, I's recomend 8 lb. Most commom used test line.Be sure to compare all the different brands and styles of line. For ex. Trilen vs. Stren or even Trilen vs. Trilen using different style line. Like smooth casting and extra resistant.

Questor
1.What does lb. test mean? There are two designations: test and tournament. Test breaks with a steady pull of at least the stated number of pounds. Tournament breaks with a steady pull of no more than the stated number of pounds. For example, 10 pound test breaks at 10 or more pounds. 10 pound tournament breaks at 10 pounds or less. In reality, most test lines "over test", which means they break with pulls significantly more than the stated amount. For example, I fish 8 pound Sufix monofilament. In reality it probably breaks at 15 pounds or perhaps more. In either case, it is the strength of the line that is being tested, not the strength of the line at the knot. Lines will often break at different strengths depending on whether a steady pull or a sudden jerk is applied. See if you can find information from IGFA about their test procedure.2.What tests should i do to test it?Typical Midwest lines, which means 4, 6, 8, and 10 if you want to compare monofilaments. Or to keep the expenses down, compare 6 or 8 pound test from various manufacturers. People can relate to that.3.what abrasion tests can i do?Two would be very useful. Breaking strength after you have abraded the line along a sharp rock, as when fishing a rocky bottom. And a second test of how much you weaken the line if you nick it with your scissors or nippers after tying a knot. Perhaps a third test to show how wear on the knot can weaken the knot.4.What other tests should i do?Decomoposition under sunlight would be very useful to know. Animals get caught in clumps of monofilament that have been discarded and they can die from entanglement. If you could show that mono has a long life after being discarded, then you can argue how important it is to properly dispose of it.If you don't want to go down that road, try comparing knot strength for selected knots: clinch, improved clinch, trilene, palomar, uni, bimini twist, no-slip loop, and blood would be good candidates. In general, when you do your story board, don't put a lot of detail on it. Just go from hypothesis to conclusion with a few simple pictures and graphs, not a lot of words. The judges don't have much time to evaluate your work, and they score simple projects better. Keep all your detailed data in your project book that accompanies the story board.Good luck. ocf1
thank you questor, from my preliminary tests all of the breaks has come from knots, what i understand that it is not from the knots breaking but from the line, i dont get how to do it without the knot breaking. My tests....Abrasionstretch tensile strengthAny other ideas guys.... 1 more day till hypothesis due!btw i left out visibility because it would be hard to scientifically test. Ralph Wiggum
The knot will always break before the line (unless there is a defect in the line). That's just the way it works.

ocf1
lol, thanks rw, i just wanted to make sure. so lb. test is the amount of constant force on the line needed to break it???
