slick2526
Im buying a late 70's 3hp johnson from my uncle because he gave up on fixing it. He said it over heated and quit running after a few minutes. He replaced the impeller and tried running the motor again. Said it ran fine, spit out a lil bit of water but not much. but said it shut down on him again. Anyone else have any suggestions on whats wrong with it? blown up/ warped head maybe? Im getting it for cheap so i guess Im will to do what needs to be done to fix it. Thanks for the time, Adam
sparcebag
Check the water line! here in minnesota we have 2 insects that like to deposit their eggs in a mud nest, they both like to do it in confined spaces, and the mud sets up rock hard!
slick2526
kind of what i was thinking. is their a easy way to clean the line? maybe just some wire?
VMS
I would think a little compressed air might do it,But..before doing so, ask your uncle if the impeller he pulled out was 100% in tact when he removed it. If it was not, it very well could be a little chunk of that blocking the passageway.Steve
slick2526
I will ask him that, he just said it wasnt working, and i never asked if it was broke. I appreciate the help guys. Thanks
sparcebag
The mud from the wasp MUD DAUBBER wont be affected much by water something in their spit, it softens with water but I dont think just air will remove it all.As far as the wire try it I dont think it could hurt. Valv
I don't think a '70s motor had the "pee hole", but I can be wrong. I would replace water pump impeller again and check all the gaskets, seals etc, then reassemble being careful to do it correctly. Be sure impeller is inserted the correct direction, key is not dropped, water tube aligned with center section, etc. I did same mistake once on a 9.9 Mercury and had to re-do it all over, solved the problem which was me being in a hurry, take your time and do a good job.
