i saw an etech commercial, lets just say the etech can drag down and capsize a yamaha with the same horse power and the same boat. It is also very clean and efficient

From what I have read about the ETech motors is that they are pretty tough to beat. Not only outperforming the four strokes, but actually give off lower emissions. I haven't talked with anyone who personally owns one, but I was pretty impressed with what I have seen and read.

I saw the informercial for e-tech as well and was left to ponder: If it gets better mileage, performance, and lower emmissions than 4-stroke engines, why is evinrude not selling these engines to car companies? They could make more money that way.

I talked to a dealer about the e tec last fall.

Buy a four stroke.

Give me a break . . .

Both E-Tec's and four-strokes have their advantages and you'll get positive opinions from each owner. My next boat will have an E-Tec after driving a few this past year, after having a four-stroke on my previous boat.

Do the research, but then, if possible, take one for a spin.

I have a 2005 75hp Etec tiller on a 17' Lund for two years now.

I dont know if it has better fuel economy than a 4 stroke because I have no way to honestly compare them. I would say I use about 5-6 gallons of gas in a good long day of fishing on Leech which include some long runs at times.

Heres what I like about it: it starts right away, is not cold-blooded upon starting in any weather, idles all day if you want to without killing off, no smoke at all, and plenty of power. I can get about 35 mph out of it, trimmed up. It is also very stingy on the oil injection and at the price they get for the premium oil that is a good thing.

One thing I dont like about it is that the peehole that tells you the water pump is working goes directly out the back of the motor, making it hard to see.

So far it has been reliable except for once last fall when it quit on me in the middle of Leech Lake. Just died on me and would not even fire again. Finally got it going again by starting it while the motor was tilted, Also saw a leak in a gasket which sprayed a little water on some of the electronics. Took it to a local dealer (it ran fine for him of course) who replaced the fuel filter which he said was a recall anyway. When I got home I found a letter from Evinrude about the fuel filter recall, doncha know, so I hope that was the problem.

I personally did not use the boat again since then except for winterizing it, but my son used it for 3 days and it ran good. Otherwise no problems at all with the Etec and it was run hard on a big lake for two summers.
