Channel cat fishing this spring

HarveyLee, I work a rotating shift so I get odd days off. What does your work schedule look like? Would it be shore fishing or by boat? The only boat I have for river use is a 12 ft. jon boat with a 7.5 hp. It will handle two people but there better not be waves. smirk.gif I'm a greenhorn at cats and I'd like to learn from someone with some experience. Although I got a crash course on cats on the Red River last summer.

I can go just about anytime. I started last season so expierence is not something I have alot of. My boat will handle the river ok. I plan on shore fishing for channels and then working the flatheads as soon as the water temps are ready.

We can keep in touch on the web. smile.gif

Harvey- Last year was my rookie year for cats as well, and durnit if i'm not hooked! I fish Metro water pretty much, and although I don't get to fish much- (2 kids, 2 jobs, yadda yadda yadda) you're more than welcome in my boat/stretch of beach, whatever when I do get out.

last year I cracked the spine on a medium weight spinning rod, this year I've got a slightly heavier rod for channels and I'm going to build a heavyweight for flats...

bring on the whiskers!

Hey Harvey! Don't be bashfull about taking the boat out early. There can be some really good spots that are tough to get from shore. I had an excellent spring last year with the high water and Shore fishing would have been impossible in many areas.

Guess what I'm saying is don't feel that you have to limit yourself till the water gets warmer.

Good luck

Larry

Harvey, it's great to hear (see) that you're enjoying your "new" found world of cat fishing! As in most cases, those who experience the thrill in battling big kitties often get hooked for life.

"If" it's in your budget and meets your time restraints, you owe it to yourself to head north at least on time in your lifetime to the Lower Red River. The Lower Red is unequivocally the absolute "MECCA" for monster channel cats. "No" other place on the planet is remotely close to being on the same page as this amazing place that I call home.

It's a place where twenty pound channels are the norm and thirty pound channels are recorded on a regular basis. The largest channel cat that I have persoanlly witnessed was caught during the summer floods back in '93. The massive fish weighed 44.7 pounds! The second largest channel cat that I personally witnessed was also caught during that same period. I was fortunate enough to have caught the monster channel and she tipped the scales at 39.5 pounds!

Once you get slammed by a monster channel cat....you're hooked for life!

Nobody has to twist my arm to hit the river either......

I have a 14 footer with a 15 horse.....

and a 18 footer with a 115.

Always good to have options.

I know the lower portion of the minnesota (carver to bloomington) pretty well...but I am always learning.

You guys can give me a shout anytime.
