Muskie stamp!

I don't know about a stamp altought I would buy one if it was offered. My argument would be that MN muskie fishery is underfunded in proportionate to the amount of people who fish them. Right now there is a study by the U of M and MI to find out how many people actively fish muskies. Hopefully when the numbers are released it will prompt the DNR to increase funding to stocking efforts and adding new lakes.

I know that many people argue that muskies hurt walleye populations. Although questions like this are difficult to prove either way, if one looks at the research that has been done they would see that muskies don't have much of an effect on walleye populations. The coveted walleye is not their first choice of prey. But I tell you what does affect walleye populations. It's the guys that going out there and kill every fish they catch. I think many walleye guys could learn from the ethics many muskie fisherman live by. Let em go and they will grow. Personally I don't care about walleyes at all. I think they are a boring fish to catch. I fish them one weekend a year and it's more about hanging with the friends than anything. But we don't kill evey fish we catch. Many will disagree and I know I am making generalizations but I think we can all agree that what we really want is a healthy sustainable fishery in MN where we all have the chance to catch a trophy regardless of the species.

Agreed. Why don't we ever hear about the much more plentiful, but similar in predation, species of Pike destroying Walleye lakes? Surely if Muskies were so damaging, Pike would be exponentially destructive.

Just food for thought.

I like both Eye's and Muskie, for the record. Maybe some of the "Muskie Haters" went to the Al Gore school of wildlife management... blush.gif

I may be in the minority, but I'd like to see our annual fishing license fee increased by $2.

I think the current price for an individual license is around $17. What a deal/steal. Given the number of anglers in this state, bumping the license fee to $20 for individuals could have a real positive impact.

The other option is that at the point of purchase the retailer could ask the buyer if they'd be willing to spend $X amount to specifically go towards "multi species stocking".

I bet the majority of anglers would contribute the $2-3 if they knew exactly what it was going towards.

The number of muskie fishermen has increased dramatically over the past 15 years. back in the late 80"s and early 90"s we would go fish independance on opening day of muskie and there would be 20 boats at the launch if you were lucky. and the next weekend there were maybe 5. Now the last time I fished it on opener was 2002 we went out at 12:00 am and were off by 7:00am and the launch was full. I don't go near that lake unless it is midweek. or at night. I think the number of people fishing muskies will surprise alot of guys.If the dnr stocks so many lakes with walleyes the are basically catch and take lakes with little reproduction. Why don't we have a fish stocking fee and generate more stocking funds. rather than a fish stamp

I would buy a stamp if all proceeds went to muskies. However I doubt this would happen. I'm sure that 25% would end up going to the Arts and Humanities. Like we don't have enough of that dump in the city already. And by the way all that money stays within 10 miles of the tall building in Mpls.

So why give the government your money? You can choose to get results in the private sector and join Muskies Inc. Volunteerism is what our country used to be about and still the only efficient way to get any thing done. Plus I guarantee that half the annual budget isn't spent shuffling papers back and forth between officers unlike the state govt. The money goes right to the resource.

I can guarantee that that would happen. The DNR does not even get 100% of our license money. If the DNR received all of our license money, funding for stocking would be a non issue.
