Question

Anyone drive one of these explorers. I am looking at a 2004 with 18000. Wondering if there where problems I should look for or any other comments ( as long as its not chevy is better and dodge is better and my dad can beat up your dad type of deal) It has the 4.6 v8

Can't comment exactly, but my Dad bought an 05 Explorer Limited with the V8 last year, and he likes it. As far as I know, he hasn't had any problems. Hope that helps, good luck!

Explorers have had transmission problems from the late 90's thru the '05 model year. The '06 model is better. The V8 really sucks down the gas.

If you're buying the vehicle from a dealer consider getting it "certified" which will cover the tranny for six years (from new) or to 75,000 miles.

No not really. Just your first round of fluid exchanges, Brakes will be getting low, Ball joints will start to have some play, Rear coils start to break (thats really the odd one some are fine for the life of the car and I've replaced several in the 35k-55k miles range), Rear diff seals start to leak.

I've got a 97 (AWD 5.0 V8)with 69k miles and it is the best vehicle that I have ever owned. Never had any problems, just normal service issues. Short trip mileage is around 14, highway is around 18 mpg. Pulling my boat around 15 mpg.

I have a '98 (120K)v8 AWD and I love it. I have my tranny serviced each year because I use it for work sometimes and towing of the boat. The tranny shop that does the servicing says that the v8 awd is one of the best Ford has built. Tranny is one of their better ones too. Remember to change transfer case lube.

Did you look at the competition? I purchased an '05 4runner after driving an '06 Explorer, '05 Trailblazer, '05 Pathfinder, and '06 Durango. The Explorer is better than the Trailblazer and Durango (Durango is the biggest of the vehicles mentioned) and about as good as the Pathfinder. My Explorer had an independent rear suspension, which rides nice but will struggle off road (I drive off road quite a bit during the summer). I narrowed down between the Pathfinder and 4runner becuase they both had very strong v6 engines (Pathfinder's v6 is very strong, stronger than Explorer's v8). I went with the 4runner becuase it felt like it was the most solidly built and it was the quietest. I had to throw down some extra greenbacks for the Toyota, but I think it was worth it considering it will have the highest resale value of the group. In all, drive some of the competition if you have not already. Just my $0.02.
